We recently connected with Mayra Salinas and have shared our conversation below.
Mayra, appreciate you joining us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
This is something that I’m working through now! As I’m building and scaling my business and feeling more comfortable sharing this process with my friends, family, and followers, I am realizing that these people are my biggest supporters and always have been. They want to help. And while I can often feel embarrassed/guilty asking for help in general, I know that my support system genuinely wants to see me succeed and have asked me HOW they can help. I’m learning how to find courage in asking for help, whether that’s financial help or not because in reality, we all need a little help.
Society normalizes giving/supporting our friends and family when they reach “milestones” such as getting married, buying a home, or having a baby which is great. However, I want to normalize supporting our friends/family who launch a new business because that’s also a big milestone! Success looks different for everyone and I want to honor that and celebrate everyone on their own path to happiness and success.
In addition, I believe in transparency and integrity so sharing HOW their support or financial contributions can help the business and its growth is important to me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Mayra Salinas and I’m a first-generation Latina educator, entrepreneur, and coach. As a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I enjoy motivating, empowering, and helping women of color and entrepreneurs unlock their potential through the power of professional coaching and personal development.
My casual, fun, and informative approach allows me to work with clients who want change in their life, whether that’s in their career, business, or lifestyle. We will work together to intentionally create time for YOU to think, process, visualize, plan, and execute goals that lead to significant change. In short, I help people write sh*t down and get sh*t done.
I landed in the coaching industry via higher education where I get to informally coach my students daily! Coaching allows me to dig deeper, get to know people, their values and overall goals in life. I’ve fallen in love with the coaching world and I’m excited to see where this path will lead me.
As a lifelong learner, I’m so proud and honored to be working towards my NYU Executive Coaching Certificate and International Coaching Federation (ICF) Certification as I’m building and scaling my coaching business all while working full-time in higher education. Yes, I’m tired and stay busy, but the journey is so worth it.
I hope that my future clients know that their future coach feels in true alignment pursuing this next chapter in life and I hope it shows through my quality work and service for others.
I hope that my future clients know that my goal is to increase affordability and access to professional coaching for people of color and small businesses and that I’m striving to increase representation in spaces that were not created with us in mind.
I hope that my future clients know that I’m human and I’m learning along the way just like they are and that together, we can work to unlock our potential to create impactful change in the world.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
For me, it’s been a mix of professional experience, formal and informal education and authenticity! My casual, fun and informative approach to life and work has really resonated with my market and allows me to show up as my true authentic self. In addition, I think being vulnerable and sharing about what I’m learning along the way is a great way to educate myself and provide value and knowledge for others.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth with a mix of social media! I’m noticing that many of my new clients are being referred by current or former clients and/or learned about me through social media where someone was sharing about their experience working with me or reposting my content.
It’s interesting because I always tell clients that it’s important for me to maintain coach/client confidentiality – it’s even written in my coaching agreement. However, my clients always have the freedom and autonomy to share about our coaching experience and I will gladly re-post after.
Thanks to all of my clients who are telling their story and empowering others to do the same! Word of mouth is powerful.
