We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tom Padilla. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tom below.
Tom, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best advice I give to clients is to make sure that they find a provider who shares their values. If it’s an active lifestyle you want, you need a provider who is passionate about living, and helping others to live an active lifestyle. You want to find a doctor that you know has your best interest at heart when making recommendations, and will help you understand your options, not tell you which one you should pick. They need to be able to help you evaluate the pros and cons of a direction of treatment, so that you can make a decision for yourself, about what’s best for you and your health.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I knew I wanted to help people stay active, and I started working as a personal trainer. The problem is that there are a lot of injured people who cannot participate in personal training because they have injuries or pains that haven’t been figured out – so I determined that the best way to help these people was to become a physical therapist so I knew as much as I could about the body and movement. When I became a physical therapist, I realized that you can help people overcome injury, but then there’s a big gap between that achievement, and helping them to start training, exercising etc.
I built my company to help bridge that gap. We not only help people overcome injury, but we help them all the way back to active lifestyles where they can push themselves to achieve more and more with their bodies, and enjoy all that life has to offer them.
Too often people feel like they are left with surgery as the only option, or left feeling like they can’t do the things they love anymore because they get hurt when they do them. We solve that problem.
Even in physical therapy, the routine has become basic. The success rate in the industry is pretty poor, with less than 30% of people finishing a plan of treatment. I built my clinic around a solid research-based thought process, that allows us to get excellent outcomes for people. Over 90% of our clients achieve their goals, and 95% of our clients finish their recommended treatment plan. This is because they see results and are excited. It’s my mission to make getting results like these more predictable in the profession, and to improve the overall outcomes and experience when it comes to being able to heal without needing to resort to pills or surgery.
Our clients rave about our results as much as our customer service. In healthcare, many times these things seem to be mutually exclusive, and customer service goes out the window. We pride ourselves on hearing feedback that not only are our patients getting better, but they feel like they are treated like family.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I opened my practice I had two partners. They were friends from graduate school and we had lived together for 2 years. We moved to Arizona from California specifically to start. the practice. Within 7 months of starting, the gym that we had opened inside of was going to close, so we had to find and secure a space in a new gym, which was 3x the price. One month after signing for the space both of my partners determined that they were not liking Arizona and that they would be moving back to California.
It was a defining moment. I am too passionate about what I’m trying to accomplish with my company, and too prideful to just walk away, so I stuck it out.
New to Arizona with no connections, and as a solo provider and business owner, I had to find my way to make this practice succeed. Now, after having passed our 5th year in business I can look back and say that was all worth it.
We have two providers on staff other than myself and a team of 6 with our sight set on growth and expansion in the near future.

Any advice for managing a team?
Hands down the best advice I have is to define your core values and hire, fire, and give feedback and praise by them. Unless you know your core values, you have no idea who you’re looking for. WHO you hire is 1,000% more important than HOW the job gets done.
