We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nate Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nate below.
Nate, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been fortunate enough to make a living off of music, but it was a long road and it took an open mind. When I first started, I really only thought about one path: write original music and perform that music at clubs for an audience. However, there are so many different ways now that you can make money with songwriting and performing, that I really feel like the secret to success is to have multiple different avenues that can create a revenue stream. It’s a concept that most people will tell you even if you work a regular job, but I think to be a working creative and survive, it’s essential. For example, I always thought that it was a little bit of “selling out” to play corporate gigs or weddings, or play in other bands, or write for other musicians, and now I see that as an opportunity to use that money to be able to afford to promote my original music properly, and “scratch the itch” of being a performer by keeping busy, which in turn helps me keep my sanity a bit, as this is a tough industry mentally and physically. I also think that you can learn a lot about yourself and about your craft by expanding your horizons a bit by learning and working with others. I don’t know how much I would’ve sped up the process knowing this, because it took me a while to accept that it was the best thing for me overall. But, once I started to embrace it and use the money that I was making to continue pushing my passion, I do wish I would’ve embraced it earlier.
Nate, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Nate Davis, and I am a career singer/songwriter/performer who has fronted a number of projects and am the founder of my current original project, “Davis & The Love” and our corporate/private event group, “Lovestruck”. We provide exceptional entertainment for events using seasoned, professional musicians, to create an energetic live concert experience for music lovers. I’m most proud of the quality of the product that we put out and the affect that we’re able to have on others by bringing them together through music. The same musicians that are in my original project are also in our event project, so it creates a really seamless and tight show, where we’re all able to be satisfied creatively and consistently work. The main thing I want followers and fans of the music to know is that it’s about bringing people together. Music is the ultimate equalizer and it brings people from all backgrounds together in celebration.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to feel the energy that you create in a room in real time. The immediate feedback of people dancing and enjoying themselves is a rush that has no equal. And, to be able to make a living off of your passion is a truly rewarding experience that I am grateful for every day. It definitely requires mental toughness and adaptability, but the payoff is absolutely worth it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission is to bring people together through music. The reason that we put “Love” in the title of both projects is because it feels like that’s a big thing that our society is missing today, and I think that the new revolution is one of love and acceptance. I just want to provide a space for people to come together and enjoy the beauty of our humanity, and dance and celebrate with one another. Music is and always has been, such an important tool in bringing people together, so my joy comes from being able to provide that while performing it with a group of people on stage that I care about like family. It’s something that I feel truly blessed being able to do, and hope that others can feel that when they come to a show.
