We were lucky to catch up with Kelsey Hogan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kelsey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
A cornerstone of the business we do at Small Batch Social Co. is something we refer to as “the it factor”.
We have a true and undeniable passion for the brands + niches that we work with. This is a non-negotiable for us (and we hope it is for you, too!).
We call this passion and connection to who we work with and what we do THE IT FACTOR.
Our IT FACTOR clients tend to be kick ass female-driven businesses in areas including (but not limited to): boutique fitness, real estate, health/beauty, influencer/lifestyle, wellness, home organization, coaches… and beyond.
Over the past 3 years in business, we have found a true niche in this group of (mostly) local, female-owned brands, and our ability to truly serve them with the utmost in white-glove, hands-on, personally curated social media services.
Being high-touch is something every client appreciates. Whether it’s showing up for in-person meetings every month, popping by the office, or sending a personal text for something urgent, our clients know they can rely on us… and we’re typically just a few blocks away! With the holidays coming up, we’re always excited to GIFT our clients something personal — and of course, handwritten notes are not dead my friends!
Kelsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi friends, Kelsey here! Founder of Small Batch Social Co. Officially “born” in 2020, we are a social media marketing + strategy boutique based in Detroit.
Our approach to social media is incredibly deliberate and never copy-paste. We research. We trendcast. We invest in our team, our tools, and our continued education, as well as our systems and processes for our clients. We’re early adopters to all the new and shiny things on IG (trust us – there’s a lot!). And most importantly, we’re freakin’ passionate as hell about what we do and who we work with.
We’ve spent over a decade honing our signature, multi-layered approach to social media marketing that establishes our clients as the utmost authority in their respective niches. While DIY will soon be obsolete, your brand’s IG presence doesn’t have to be.
When I’m not on Instagram, you can find me being a mama to her two littles + a crazy puppy (and probably listening to a true crime pod … and definitely drinking a pumpkin cream cold brew).
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
This one is two-fold.
Number one: Instagram. We are an Instagram agency, and our presence has cultivated a community that has driven many client leads our way from across the country. This is a community and network we place a very high value on and are extremely proud of.
Number two: Word of mouth. Maybe it’s via IG, maybe it’s IRL, but our clients and friends have shared us with their clients and friends and have kept our community of new and happy clients on the up and up for nearly 3 years now!
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Something I am incredibly passionate about is managing a team. My background involves managing an office of over 20+ junior PR associates, and I definitely thrive in a leadership role. At Small Batch, my “team” is a little different — right now I have one part time junior content creator on board (the amazing Olivia), and in the past have had various interns and contractors as part of our team. My biggest advice is to be an ally, lead by example and with integrity, show empathy and kindness, teach vs. tell, and truly respect the people working for you. I know the idea of your work team being “family” can seem toxic, but in our case, it definitely is NOT!
