We were lucky to catch up with Kat Mesaros recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kat thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
Kat’s Crystals and Curiosities started out as a way for me to share my knowledge of the metaphysical with people. The metaphysical and being misunderstood seem to go hand and hand in today’s society. While it is becoming more widespread, there is still a lot of prejudice and confusion surrounding the occult and metaphysical. The definition of metaphysics is literally “beyond physics” or “a study of what is outside objective experience.” We make and sell items such as crystals, intention bags, spell jar necklaces, pendulum cloths, evil eye jewelry, Hamsa hand jewelry, astrological symbols, etc. The nature of these items and symbols are inherently mystical, so we make sure to explain these things to people so they can gain their own understanding and experiences with these spiritual items. The biggest insight I have taken from this journey, is that most people do not intend to be ignorant and most are willing to learn. If you are able to explain the true meaning and benefits of these items, then most people become more receptive to them. It has been amazing to teach others about my beliefs and see it work magick in their lives as well as my own.
Kat , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Kat’s Crystals and Curiosities is a small mother-daughter business specializing in handmade artwork, jewelry, and crafts, as well as all things involving crystals and the metaphysical. My mother and I are artists and entreprenures through and through. I grew up attending craft fairs and almost every person in my family is an amazing creative in one medium or another. We’ve had a dream to have our own business selling handmade hippie themed items for over 7 years. The idea finally became more solidified once I was out of high school and living on my own. I’ve had a passion for crystals for many years, but during the pandemic, my collecting got a tad bit out of hand. I started seeking out more rare crystals, building my collection to at least triple the size it had previously been, and buying books to learn more about the spiritual properties of these beautiful gemstones. I dove in deep down the rabbit hole and before I knew it, I could easily identify every common stone and even knew info on what chakra it belongs to, its rarity, crystalline structure, and metaphysical properties. Using this knowledge, I bought all of the genuine crystal beads I could find at the craft store and set to work making bracelets. I sat holed up in my apartment for an entire winter, making hundreds of bracelets with no idea of what I was planning on doing with them. Then one day, I was scrolling on Facebook and came across an add for the festival ‘Hippie Fest.’ I went to buy a ticket and realized they sold tickets for vendors as well. That’s when the lightbulb went off! I wanted to be a vendor for this event! So I hastily secured my spot. Then I had to come up with a name for my newfound business. After much consideration, I finally landed on Kat’s Crystals and Curiosities. This seemed to fully encompass what I wanted my future brand to represent. Then I quickly enlisted the help of my mother to help me stock up an inventory of items for this upcoming event. In the meantime, we had a friend approach us about another event that was being held at the Fairgrounds in our town. We signed up for that one as well and suddenly had two events on our hands. I decided that I wanted my mom to be my 50-50 business partner. She readily and excitedly agreed and we worked throughout that summer to have everything ready for our booked events. We were blown away at the response to our items at Hippie Fest and felt very assured that we were on the right path. Then life had other plans and we had to take a hiatus due to unexpected events going on in my mom’s life. Then, I also had some unexpected life events happen and went through a horrible time with my mental health. As a way to kickstart my healing journey, I decide to put all of my time and energy back into our business. We filed our LLC 7/20/22 at 2:22 PM. The synchronicity of the angel numbers alone gave us new hope that we were on the right track. We immediately started booking gigs left and right and have been steadily building our business and brand ever since. This has been such an amazing journey for us. Everything about this business is personal to me, its my baby. We provide products and services of the metaphysical nature. We sell crystals, spell jars, intention bags, pendulum cloths, jewelry with astrological symbols, Hamsa Hands, and Evil Eyes. We also sell some other items such as thrifted clothing, pottery, artwork, crochet items, etc. We honestly supply items that we would want to see in a shop and that make us happy! The thing we are the most proud of is being able to provide knowledge to people that will uplift them spiritually. We aspire to raise the vibration of the planet and the collective consciousness with our work!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an artist is so rewarding that I can’t choose a single most rewarding aspect, so I am going to highlight a few. One of my favorite things is helping and inspiring others. Wether its an aspiring business owner, a fellow crystal girlie, another creative, a mom who’s “never heard of this stuff before”, or a young child- seeing a spark of inspiration in a person’s eyes and knowing that you were the one who put that there, has got to be one of the best feelings on the planet. Another rewarding feeling is when a person sees your artwork and says “I have to have that!” It is so amazing seeing your ideas and handmade items being appreciated. Especially when the market is so saturated and the economy is so bad, it’s an honor when someone spends their hard earned money with us. The last rewarding aspect I would like to highlight, is simply being able to teach people. My whole life, I wanted to be a school teacher. Well, that path didn’t pan out for me but it’s because I was meant to teach people things that I never would have been able to inside the walls of an institution. The entirety of this journey has been rewarding to me, even the parts that didn’t go the way I had initially wanted them to. So thank you for the platform to be able to discuss some of the most important aspects.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to give people the tools, resources, and knowledge they need to expand in their spiritual journey. If people are interested in crystals, I want to be a resource for them to purchase genuine gemstones and receive information on the properties of the crystals they choose. If someone wants to know how to ground themselves, I would love to teach them about red jasper and black tourmaline and how to release negative ions into the Earth through their feet in a process called Earthing. All the knowledge I have, is there for me to share with others. These practices have helped me personally grow and elevate. They have also helped me when I was in some extremely dark places in my life. From a young age, I have suffered from severe anxiety and depression. Crystals, manifestation, journaling, divination, spell work, astrology, numerology, herbs, etc have all helped heal my mind and soul in a way that is honestly beyond my explanation. These items and philosophies are truly magick. I went through a Dark Night of the Soul this past year and had it not been for these rituals and practices in my life, I don’t know if I would have made it out alive. I want to help other people who are in these low, dark places in life and help them elevate to where I know they are capable of being. I want to raise the vibes and make people happy everywhere I go.
