We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Arkidelik. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Arkidelik below.
Arkidelik, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned mostly by watching others. I always had ideas, but didn’t fully understand how to express them musically until I started sitting in on studio sessions learning the gear, terminology, and the whole process of making a record.
I think I could have sped up the learning process if I had invested in my own gear a little sooner, but hindsight is always 20/20. Also, I probably should have asked more questions.
I personally think the most essential skill is listening to UNDERSTAND rather than reply. Also as I stated before, don’t be afraid to ask questions about things you don’t understand.
As for obstacles, travel was an issue for a while. I didn’t have a car at the time, so getting back and forth to different studios was a little rough. Also, “gatekeeping” was kind of a thing. Some people weren’t very forthcoming with information. I don’t want to speculate as to the reasons, but I had to figure out a lot on my own.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by the name of Arkidelik. I used to perform under different stage names over the years (Ill Shorty, Ill Stout, Tone Benjaminz). I started out as a party and college radio DJ before switching over to rapping and producing. I also mix and remix projects for other artists, and I’m a bit of a shutterbug. I think what sets me apart is that I am not afraid to experiment with music outside of my comfort zone. My work spans “traditional” Hip Hop, to hardcore, boom bap, instrumental and comedy themed projects. What I’m most proud of is that even with the ageism prevalent in our genre, people still check to hear what the “old guy” is currently working on. It’s a blessing that I’ll never take for granted. What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when my work has helped someone get through a tough time in their lives. Sometimes you may have a particular song or poem or video that you can point to and say “This got me through a really bad time”. It’s a feeling like someone else understands what you’re going through, and sometimes that’s all we need to keep going.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’m still working on that, so please let me know when you find out!!! All I can really say is be yourself, because people can tell when you aren’t being genuine.
