We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robbie Harrell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Robbie, appreciate you joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?

Scaling up has been a work in progress since Minnesota Ice was founded. One of our biggest challenges has been growing and evolving our professional capabilities, not just to the size we are today but to the size we will be next year. Significant organizational financial growth has required the Minnesota Ice team to grow its professional capabilities dramatically. There are a few ways we problem-solved this challenge.

First, we acknowledge that people are at the center of our ability to create value for our customers. We invest heavily in training and development, practiced at individual and small-group levels. We teach time-tested principles and consistently re-evaluate how we’re progressing.

Second, we leverage our data. We’re consistently scrutinizing our outputs, product strategies, operational efficiencies and inefficiencies, and finding data-driven solutions for scaling our business. Analyzing data helps us better understand where we’re not doing well and allows us to focus our time and attention on solving high-leverage issues. Combined with market data and output obstacles, our operations team uses each piece of the manufacturing puzzle to create a better, more efficient business.
