We were lucky to catch up with Petra Lengauer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Petra, appreciate you joining us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
After I got certified as a personal trainer, I went out on a few interviews. I didn’t get any offers, as I apparently didn’t have any experience. In one interview at a high end, well known gym I was asked by the manager: ‘why now?’’ Did he really just age discriminate me? I just answered the question as I didn’t want to lower myself to his immature level. I added a specialization to be able to offer more and got a job right away. It was not my first choice, but I’m glad to have worked there, as I gained lots of confidence.
Petra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been working out myself for many years and staying fit and healthy is very important for me, so I wanted to share my knowledge with others and work in the field. I now help women with their body transformational goals, may that be to lose/gain weight, get more energy, better balance and posture and the confidence that comes with that type of transformation. I am very I tuned with my clients and can read them very well what they need on a particular day based on how they feel. That might be a really hard workout one day or a stretching session the next, or even talking about past experiences to figure out where some of the pain points in the body come from the help clear them out with breathing exercises. I’m most proud to be able to point out breakthroughs with my clients. Many times they don’t notice them and when I make them aware of them it empowers them and are able to progress faster.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Understanding each individual client’s needs, understanding where they are in their journey and what goals they want to reach. Feeling into how they feel on a particular day, which is different every time and be able to pivot quickly from the previously thought out work to what will serve the client best on that particular day. I have worked with clients where I thought we would do a workout and – instead – sue to their circumstances, how their day/life went, we would slow down and figure out where their back pain came from. So far it has always proofed to be more useful than pushing a certain program.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
It would still be part of my life, but if I could do it all over again, I would choose finance and/or singing. Something completely different from what I am actually doing, this is why I need a few more lifetimes.
