We were lucky to catch up with Emily Aull recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Naming your business comes with so much pressure. It literally feels like trying to name a baby. I played around with a few names that referenced being organized/tidy/clutter free etc, but none of them really resonated with me.
I used to teach 4th and 5th grades and always called my students my “Aull Stars. After thinking of how I could apply this to my business “Aull Organized” quickly became the obvious choice. I like it for a few reasons. First, it very plainly tells people what I do, it’s unique! An added bonus is that it’s also a silly pun, and if anyone knows me, corny jokes and puns are some of my favorite things in life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Emily Aull, owner of Aull Organized. Aull Organized is a professional organizing business focused on providing in-home services throughout Kansas City. Think of us as the final step to your interior design. We implement organizational systems that are customized to your aesthetic preferences and lifestyle. While every client and space is unique, our goal is always the same — create beautiful organization that brings energy, peace and a little more happiness to your home.
I started Aull Organized on a whim, after some consistent encouragement/harassment from my girlfriends. After visiting my home and seeing my pantry, they convinced me this could be service people would be willing to pay for. I wasn’t sure about this, but after completing a few projects for friends and family, and sharing a few before and after photos online, things quickly took off!
I’ve had clients hire me for entire home move-in projects, single rooms, or consult with them on a renovation project. Pantries and kitchens are usually the most popular spaces, but I’ve worked on plenty of closets, bathrooms, craft rooms, home offices, and even an interior design textile sample room.
I like to think of Aull Organized as the “Interior Design” of organization. Yes, we organize spaces within your home. I want things to be practical, functional, and sustainable for the entire family. However, there is a heavy emphasis on aesthetics, design, and the products chosen. I want the organization to streamline your life and provide the calm we all need – but I also NEED it to look good. I describe what we do as “Elevated Organization”.
As much as I enjoy the beauty that organization provides, the mental relief is just as important. I often tell clients that you can file organization under mental health services. I’ve had clients cry tears of joy and relief when a project was completed. Our environments have a tremendous impact on the way we think, feel, and behave. When a space is organized, we relax. There’s a new sense of calm and we have more time doing the things we love.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started the Aull Organized Instagram account in 2021. I started posting little projects I had done in my own home, simple organization tips and favorite products. I find that being consistent, posting what you LOVE and sharing valuable information resonates the most with people. People love learning new things. Word of mouth is the best marketing there is. If someone following your account loves something that you share, they’ll pass it along to friends.
Kansas City is full of women-owned businesses that love supporting one another. I’ve been lucky to meet, partner and work with so many of them! If you’re looking to grow your business, meeting new people and establishing some genuine relationships is key.
Also. Put on blinders. Don’t fall into the comparison trap. No one out there is quite like you, or doing what YOU do. Share what you love, what gets you excited and people will notice and even share your excitement.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth and Social Media have been the key to my growth. Kansas City is a big city but has small-town vibes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve met a client that knows a neighbor, a relative, or a coworker that I’ve worked with in the past. Establishing a solid reputation and doing great work will speak for itself. Clients love sharing what they love and the positive experiences they’ve had with businesses.
Lastly, for what I do, creating a portfolio of work is also very beneficial. It’s important for potential clients to be able to see what you’re capable of and the services you provide. Sharing photos on Instagram and on my website is key!
