Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stephanie Wang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Stephanie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I knew I wanted the name of the company, Crowned Wang, to be a name that characterized both something unique about me and also emphasized my desire to empower each customer to be all they are created to be. Ironically enough though, at the time I came up with the name, I still did not know what type of product I would be selling. Laying in bed one night daydreaming about starting my own company, the idea of Crowned Wang popped into my mind. It was perfect. My name, Stephanie, is said to mean “the crowned one” and be associated with royalty in Europe. I could then combine this with my last name Wang. When pronounced in Chinese, Wang sounds like “wong”, so changing “crowned one” to “crowned wang” was a fun play on words and made the name more unique to me. Including the meaning of my first name and its connection to royalty, incorporated my desire to make customers feel special and all they are created to be. No matter what the product, it would be something fit for royalty where customers would in turn be Crowned as royalty.
Stephanie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a lover of handcrafted goods and creating anything and everything at home. After transitioning from one desk job to another, I had three different jobs over the course of four years, it felt like it was time to take the plunge into something handmade! I needed something that I could handcraft but was also practical in our 800-square-foot apartment. I had made soap as favors for my wedding a year earlier and had been making them for daily use at home. With a low start-up cost and possible with the space constraints, soap seemed like just the right fit.
I love the opportunity to share something we use daily as a family with our customers. Our specialty is in using the least amount of ingredients possible to make the highest-quality product to crown our customers. All our products have seven or fewer ingredients, are scented with essential oils, and embody the simplicity of a vegan product with no colorings.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Soap-making is a competitive market, especially online. One of the most effective strategies for Crowned Wang has really been gaining the support of our local community through local fairs and markets.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
One of the great things about starting a soap business is you can start small without a lot of capital. I am thankful for the time in my previous jobs that allowed me to save enough capital to start Crowned Wang.
