We recently connected with Sierra Mays and have shared our conversation below.
Sierra , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Black Roses is a salon where we provide an exceptional experience. Customer service is our top priority. When we think of black roses we think of something that is dead and no longer of value. At Black Roses Salon my mission is to revitalize and give life to every customer I meet by giving them an amazing hairstyle which promotes confidence. We also have a great retail line of Satin Bonnets, Wigs, Growth oil and so much more..

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I move to Houston Texas 13 years ago with three kids, $1200, a few certifications and a dream. My dream was to create stability and open a Hair Salon while raising my kids as a business owner. 13 years later Black Roses Salon is a permanent fixture in the Spring area of Houston employing myself and my two daughters! We are very crafty individuals with myself specializing in Weaves, Wigs, Growth Regimens, Handmade Skirts and Hair Bows. My daughter Janyah specializes in Braids, Handmade Satin Bonnets, Satin Scrunchies, Key chains and so much more. My daughter Parish specializes in Makeup and handmade Chakra bracelets. We are definitely a one stop shop where we define “customers come first!”
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Quantity over Quality was the biggest lesson I had to unlearn and teach myself that it should always be Quality over Quantity. I used to book so many people in one day and while the money was good the service was not. When you overbook yourself you are not going to give each person an amazing experience and you will also burn yourself out fast. Now I book one person at a time with a 30 minute break in between each client. This provides balance for me and great service for each client.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience by providing daily content and running ads. Do not be afraid to run ads because that is how you will get your brand out there. And make sure you are on all social media platforms although, it can be exhausting. Have someone help you run your social accounts if it’s too much for you to handle and run your business.
