We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jadon Johnson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jadon below.
Jadon, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I started my business, LUXE Financial Consultancy, LLC during the thick of the pandemic in April 2021. I received a bookkeeping certificate and decided I was just going to take on a few clients to get my feet wet. Little did I know God had a bigger plan. They say “tell God your plans if you want to make him laugh”. After six months, I had 4 accounting clients and numerous tax preparation clients. In a year, the number doubled and I was no longer accepting clients. At my one and half year mark, I joined a 12 week business coaching program for accounting, tax, and finance professionals. This was a game changer. I scaled my business in 12 weeks by hiring two people, implementing systems, documenting processes, writing procedures, learning marketing strategies, increasing efficiencies, etc. After a year and a half, I can honestly say the business does not look the same. The best advice I can give is to invest in yourself. There is no amount of money that is too much for me. Find a trusted professional in your field and bet on yourself. They have paved the way so that you don’t have to waste precious time struggling to figure it all out. There is a person who specializes in every area of your business. The sooner you realize that and act upon it, is the sooner your business can grow to a 6 or 7-figure business.
Jadon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated from the “UNSINKABLE” Albany State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. But, to be honest, accounting wasn’t my first choice. I was a biology major with a minor in chemistry because initially, I thought I wanted to be a pharmacist. In the same semester, I took both Organic Chemistry and Microbiology— BIG MISTAKE! During that time, I realized science was not for me. I changed my major 3 times after that! I majored in sports therapy, marketing, and finally, accounting. When I changed my major to accounting, my dad called me and said, “you’re not going to be a forever student so pick a major and stick with it”. I went to the career center and took a career aptitude test. My highest scores were in areas dealing with people and numbers. Since I was already an accounting major, I just needed to marry the two principles together so I decided that I wanted to open my own accounting firm. I later obtained my MBA, with an emphasis in International Business, from the University of Southern Mississippi. I work full time as an accountant, specializing in Financial Reporting and Internal Audit for a Fortune 500 company. In my down time, I was often preparing taxes and providing consulting services for small businesses. So in 2020, I turned my hobby into a business. I am now the owner and operator of LUXE Financial Consultancy (LUXE). LUXE is a unique accounting firm that offers CFO and tax services to small businesses. Essentially, we are your “Virtual Financial Concierge”. We are unique in that we provide a luxury experience for every client from the beginning to the end. We assess each client’s needs and provide high quality services in every aspect of their business. We believe that small businesses should operate like large businesses by understanding their financial strengths and operating in that space. We ensure that each client receives the education, expertise, knowledge, and proactive thinking that they deserve. Regardless of the industry, we are committed to the success of our clients.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn not to take anything personal in business. Growing up, I always had the support of friends and family at my dance recitals, cheer competitions, pageants, graduations, etc. However, when I started my business, that wasn’t necessarily the case. People who want to support you will. Those that don’t, won’t. That’s OK because everyone is not always a suitable fit from a business standpoint and friends and family should not always be your customers.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
By establishing a personal brand I AM Ja’Don J and being intentional about the content posted. Being this Lifestyle Accountant was easy for me, which inspired my audience to turn their own lifestyles into a tax write off. The majority of my followers are millennials, who prefer to receive information in creative ways. My first step was to identify what my audience responded to the most and then I proceeded from there. For example, business travel outside of the United States is 100% deductible whether it’s a plane, train, bus, car, etc. In August, I took a luxury trip to Mexico and detailed how it was a business expense. As a result, my followers grew from 3k to almost 9k in four months.
