We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Memry Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Memry Wilson below.
Memry Wilson, appreciate you joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
I worked for someone who showed me I can do this myself. Which in my opinion is the best lesson a boss can teach someone. I previously, had a boss that was untrained, she had no experience in the beauty industry aside from receiving services, and was a first time business owner all together. She had a huge pharma background, so she knew how to sale, which is great!
But when you open a service oriented business you have to have a spirit of serving, not that of a salesman. It showed up in so many ways in her business practices that she didn’t open to be of service to patrons, she didn’t open to provide a great work environment for her employees, she opened to make the sales. Out of my 20 years of being in the work force I’d never been fired or let go from a job. She was the first boss to fire me and she will be the last. I want to thank her for showing me I can do this, and do this better!

Memry Wilson, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
How I got Into the industry: My grandmother was a beautician and owned her own business for over 30 years. I started taking cosmetology in high school and finished in between my freshman and sophomore year at Tennessee State University studying Mass Communications. After obtaining a masters in education in 2014 I moved to Los Angeles California to pursue passion dreams. While bouncing from gig to gig I needed consistent cash. I saw an ad on workpop a lash bar on Melrose was hiring. They’d train you as long as you had an active license in esthetics or cosmetology. I jumped on board and it’s been an eventful ride ever since.
I currently provide lash services, lash education and lash supplies for professionals and my students.
My clients come to me wanting to look pretty. They don’t like fighting with strip lashes and messy glue you have to apply daily. So I’m creating a beauty service that helps alleviate frustration, panic and anxiety when getting ready every morning. Lashes are already on, they don’t have to make sure they look identical, they don’t have to make sure they applied enough glue and have waited enough time for it to get tacky to apply them. It’s really a win win. They come in for their appointment get to take a lash nap and then wake up fabulous. I think what sets me apart from others is my willingness to listen to my clients needs and fears. I won’t go past where I know they won’t be comfortable with their desired lash style.
To be honest, I’m most proud of not giving up. It’s easy to be faced with what appears to be the impossible and retreat. The reward is found in pushing through and I’m doing that!
I’m not perfect and I don’t claim to be but I do my best and take pride in my work every single day. I give all that I have and some to make sure my clients leave pleased and in love with their eyes. Which is really a huge ego boost in more ways than one! You really did “Wake up like this” sis!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The most important thing to make it in the lash industry is patience!!! Patience with yourself learning and mastering the craft.
Patience with your clientele and educating them on the service. As well as, the things they have to do at home to keep them up.
Then last but not least, Patience with your loved ones if they choose not to come to you to be serviced.
That can be a hard one, because it’s hard not to feel offended.
I keep going anyway! Currently I am also doing events to give back to people in my community as well as bring awareness to my business. Giving back and sewing seeds along the way, has no choice but to come back to you 10 fold in due time.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honestly what helped me in my market was going to work for someone else who had no experience in the field. I was forced to lead because I had the most experience out of the 15 people in the building. Clients would have questions, they’d ask me. Employees had questions, they’d ask me. People saw that, they knew.
People are always watching. So even though I wasn’t the owner of the business, my name wasn’t all over the walls, I didn’t even know how much a client tipped me unless they told me, I had the sauce (as the new kids say)
I knew one thing, how to do my job and do my job well. So I stood out, word got out, and now you can find tons of Google reviews on me in different places that help support the reputation I’ve built for myself.
People will try to disguise hiring you as them building and pouring into you, and in reality you were building them the entire time.
