We were lucky to catch up with Kathy Zikas and Janais Lopez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Janais, Kathy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The biggest and most important lesson we have learned having our own business is that risks are the only way to get to where you want to be. You need to be uncomfortable, You need to get out of your comfort zone. No way else to grow. One risk that we have taken was leasing our C+C studio. This was mid pandemic time. We were not sure if we would be making enough to pay for our rent since there was so many less weddings and bookings happening. With no solid answer on when or if anything would be back to “normal”. But we went for it! We knew that we’d make it work and thankfully, we did 😅. Now we are on our second year of renting our studio and we are so happy that we did take that risk and allowed ourselves to grow.
Janais , Kathy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a wedding hair and makeup company. We want to change up the usual, basic, “Pinteresty” wedding beauty feed. We didn’t see enough poc or lgbtq photos and our main goal is to show EVERYONE. All skin colors, hair textures and sizes! Not just the “pretty” pictures that works for the wedding beauty “aesthetic “. That is what we want our potential clients to automatically see and get from our posts and website. We don’t just show the pretty wedding venue with the “pretty” bride. We show the real behind the scenes. We show diversity in every aspect.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That you don’t need to be a robot! Meaning, people relate to people. Talk to them as a friend and make them feel comfortable. You don’t need to be that kind of person that is in your head and that you think you should be like or talk like.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
We worked other hair and makeup jobs in the past and kept bumping into each other. Finally we hung out, ate some pizza and BAM! Now we are bffs and own a business together.
