We were lucky to catch up with Jamica Bolton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamica, thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am absolutely happier as a business owner! In 2016, I decided to resign as an educator because I needed to be in a healthier environment. As a former educator, I think about how grateful I am that I was running my business as COVID-19 impacted us all. Although I truly enjoyed my career in education, the amount of stress added to the lives of educators is unreal. My business has allowed me a great deal more peace so returning to a “regular” job isn’t a thought that crosses my mind.
Running a business is extremely difficult…and starting a business without any prior “knowledge” is a whole other situation…lol! In all that we do in life, there will be challenges, growing pains and life lessons. Our main job, in my option, is to place ourselves in situations that will allow us to thrive as individuals effectively & efficiently with the least amount of emotional damage. J’s Creations is that place for me! It’s truly my happy place!
Jamica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
J’s Creations was created in 2016 from the desire to leave the Education Profession and fill my days with things that make me HAPPY!!! Life is waaaay too short to be in spaces that challenge your peace and happiness! I didn’t leave Education completely…I do consultations and school/system/corporation accreditations. I LOVE giving insight and working with other professionals on ways to make improvements that will give all students a better chance at a level playing field and success.
The world of “crafting” wasn’t all together new to me, but it was a major change! In order to learn and perfect my craft, I joined Embroidery Clubs (all of the members were retired grandmas 😂 …I was the only youngster and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED it!), attended conferences, networked with people all over the world, attended YouTube University (I haven’t graduated yet…there’s still soooooo much more to learn 😀) and spent countless sleepless nights practicing to ensure I provided the BEST & BADDEST products possible!
I am approaching SEVEN years in business and WHEW CHILE…it is an AMAZING ride!!! I am learning new ways to “do” business better each day. I can’t do everything…but the challenges provided and the FAITH my customers have in me, and my skills keeps me going 🥰!
2020 was the first year that I actually set business goals! Since starting J’s Creations, I have just been “doing the work” and didn’t have the time to focus on the “other stuff”…which is so very necessary! But hey…we live and we learn…and if we are wise…we do better! Although 2020 was extremely challenging in so many ways for so many, it was a great business year for J’s Creations. NOPE…we haven’t hit millionaire status…YET 😜!
I am super excited about what 2023 and beyond has in store! I have my goals set and the wheels are turning like never before!
I am not perfect but strive daily to provide an EXTRAORDINARY custom shopping experience that makes you feel EXTRAORDINARY in your custom apparel! It’s not easy…but when I tell you it’s ALL WORTH IT…BELIEVE ME!!!
My goal is to encourage others to take that leap of faith and do “that thing” that they may not believe they can while looking SUPER CUTE ️😊 !
I have truly been blessed by each of you and I am THANKFUL beyond words for all of your support as we continue to evolve together.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
J’s Creations is self-funded. I began purchasing equipment and attending conferences my last year as an educator. I have been fortunate enough to be able to reinvest in the business from the beginning with profits from sales due to the most amazing customers ever!!!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think a couple of things helped build my reputation: great customer service, quality products, products that make you feel AND look good and the “extraness” that I can’t seem to get away from…lol!
I believe in great customer service and always have! I come from a customer service orientated family, and it is all I know! My motto is that people don’t have to be kind to you, shop with you or share your business so when it happens, I make sure to let them know that I truly appreciate them because they didn’t have to!
I think it is important to create designs, apparel that not only looks good but has meaning for the individual that will wear it. All of my items are made to order, and I strive to provide garments that hold some meaning that will last some time. I strive and live for the “wow” factor when a customer receives their purchased item(s). I always want to make people feel good and worthy of beautiful custom items when they shop with J’s Creations!
My customers make it super easy to do what I love and comes so naturally! I work to create an experience and I believe they feel my passion.
