We were lucky to catch up with Ouida Brown-Lyons recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ouida thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My name is Ouida Brown-Lyons, I’m a Lifestyle Fitness-Nutrition Coach and Reiki Master. I own a business that assist women of all ages, backgrounds and shapes to be mentally, physically and spiritually sound and balanced.
How did I come with the idea of N.E.W. BodyByOuida? N.E.W. represents nutrition, exercise, and wellness therapies just for women.
It all started after I resigned from a career, I enjoyed for 16 years as a Mortgage Account Executive. My ex-husband created so much confusion with my work I decided it was better for me to quit and take care of my mother who was diagnosed with lung cancer and my father who was diagnosed with congested heart failure in 2008. When they were diagnosed, I was in the process of going through an ugly divorce after 10 years of marriage and I wasn’t working because I was taking care of my parents and my son who was 12 years old at the time. I realized during this time I need more income. I had a 11-year background as a competitive figure skater and an avid fitness enthusiast I quickly identified I needed to do something that would help my parents heal and made money. So, I decided to get certified in nutrition and personal training and started my parent company that was initially a mobile business, Fusion5, Shaping Bodies Changing Lives, LLC. I picked this name because everything I knew about life was changing right before my eyes. And the only thing I could hold on to in those moments was my mind, body, and soul. And I knew from talking to others about my business and what was going on in my life that there were other women going through the same thing too. My mantra became “when we learn we teach.”
Fusion 5 represented what I felt were the important pillars of health – exercise, nutrition, sleep, water, and meditation. These were the things that help sustain me and my son even through my parents’ deaths in 2009. I was so devastated losing everything, but it was in those moments that my business took off. I made it my purpose to help women in times of transition; because life is filled with transitions that make us think of only the transition and not how to take care of ourselves so we can transition with less stress. I received my certification as a Reiki Master to understand how we can tap into the infinite wisdom of healing ourselves. I figured this would give me the opportunity to offer a full well rounded 360 wellness plan for women of all ages, backgrounds and shapes.
When the 2020 pandemic hit, I had to pivot my mobile business to 100% virtual on the Zoom platform. I thought to myself here’s another BIG transition. I knew absolutely nothing about virtual and it was so daunting at first. After getting acclimated with Zoom I rebranded myself as N.E.W BodyByOuida and add Wellness Retreats to my services. And today I have assisted over 200 women with their health and wellness.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Lifestyle Fitness-Nutrition Coach and Reiki Master. I have a BA degree in Business from GA Southern University. I hold certifications in Personal Training, Nutrition and Health Coaching, Vitamin Therapy, and MBSR (mindfulness-based stress reduction) Meditation and Reiki.
The problems I solve for my clients included weight loss, weight management, menopause, diabetes, cardiovascular, and stress management,
I am most proud of the accomplishments of my clients. My clients fall between the ages of 45 to 70. Their willingness to trust me and the process to meet their health and body goals. I have worked with women who just needed the accountability and knowledge to see they could do it.
My retreats serve as a safe space for women to gather as we did in ancient times to share knowledge, relax and rejuvenate to be better versions of themselves.
What I want potential clients to know is that my brand is about inspiring, and motivating, women to do the hard stuff to learn more about who they are and setting body goals that make them feel good about their health, mind, body and soul.
And I’m 54 years old and hope to do this until I can’t.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
