Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandon Colby. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work. This definitely took me a little bit of time, I guess you would call this the yes phase. Saying yes to every project that comes your way whether it piques your interest or not. Having to eat ramen or sometimes just not eat, truly made me feel the hunger of being a starving artist. I believe this was a key motivator to my rapid growth and “hunger” to turn my passion into my career. I appreciate these times because they taught me how to be resilient and resourceful. Being open to the process has helped me develop into a versatile photographer. Taking this as an opportunity to learn and improve. Growth is so important whether it is a tiny step toward your goal or a massive one, all that matters is that you are making progress toward your goal.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a Denver-based lifestyle photographer/videographer, specializing in concert, personal branding, and corporate content creation. I relentlessly create and collaborate to tune my technique and style, I do not settle for just being a photographer. My ambition to break away is demonstrated through my vision and is molded by music, the outdoors, and the friendships made along the way.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistently being at every event, providing more than was expected, and continuously improving my editing/photographing skills. I also pride myself on supporting my friends / “hungry artists” and working with them just for the sake of creating and trying to promote their vision because I once was there.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Outreach is key to growing your clientele. A skill I learned working in sales. Get your work in front of as many people as possible the worst thing they will say is no. For referrals go above and beyond your client’s expectations so they continue to see your value and want to work with/recommend you.
