We were lucky to catch up with Sun Sensei recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sun thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Growing up in my grandparents church, I’ve always took an interest in audio. I would record the services and set up the microphones. I’d even play around with the mixer board. Fast forward to around 14 years old, i taught myself how to play the piano. My uncle had FL studio on his computer and i spent hours in front of the computer learning how to make beats. I played my second beat for my best friend and he asked me “why aren’t you famous yet?” Lol that’s when i knew i was onto something special.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Early on i would utilize social media (MySpace, tumblr then later on Instagram.) to spread my beats around. Started making beats for friends in middle/high school. I had teachers and family friends who would connect me with people they knew and i started selling my beats. after my second year of college, i moved to Atlanta & built my network there. Got introduced to DTP (Jeff Dixon) and that’s where things really began to progress. I produce mainly R&B/Funk music but I’m not a stranger to hip hop. I’m most proud of my first major placement was Dom Kennedy. Funny story: In high school, Dom was my favorite rapper. I listened to him everyday and used to tell my mom & siblings that I’ll produce for him one day. Power of the tongue is real. That let me know that i am walking in my purpose. When i work with artists, it’s just a surreal synergy that i have with them, almost as if I’m in sync with them spiritually. I’m very in tune spiritually, so i believe that helps me understand and build a beautiful trust with the artist. I see my self as their assistant. I’m here to bring their vision to life.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
So many books. My father is very big on business & prayer. Outside of the Bible, books such as Think & Grow Rich & Outwitting The Devil were a staple in my mindset development.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing your vision come into fruition. I’d randomly have a melody or a song idea in my head. To be able to take a voice note and make it into a full production is the most beautiful yet challenging thing. But also, it is a form of therapy. A lot of times when I’m stressed, i channel the energy into being creative.
