We recently connected with Rockford Rockwelz Forbes and have shared our conversation below.
Rockford Rockwelz, appreciate you joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I’ve been misunderstood with my music as well as in life period. I’ve went from school teachers suggesting I needed professional help to being one of the first hiphop artists to perform at Long Islands WBLI Summer Jam. At a stadium that size I wouldn’t doubt some of those same teachers paid to see me perform. Who doesn’t like a great success story am I right?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I go by the stage name Rockwelz aka the most interesting man behind a microphone. I can write a book on my journey as a classic hip-hop artist in a microwave era. C.O.O and co owner of Mxnxpxly Music Publishing LLC, I have banked on my ability to curate some of the most unique and repeat worthy music. I’m most proud of myself for not diluting my message and staying true to my ideals. I never craved fame or fortune. Just making a honest effort to feed my family and making the music that provokes thought Making the listener think were always my main objectives.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I tell people all the time, wanting to be a artist is a crazy career to have. These kids just see the end result alot of the time and not the work involved to get to that point. It’s a focused stubbornness that makes you believe its never too late to be who you want to be. In my live it has always been about facing risks. Realizing the consequences that can potentially change your life and still putting your cards on the table without folding. All the doors that closed in our face we found a way to still keep the faith. From rapping for empty venues to touring internationally. There’s still a way to go but Ive learned to break large tasks into smaller goals and treat yourself. Don’t work ourselves out of enjoying that win.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d have to say acknowledgement from the heroes we hold in high regard. This summer we were booked to open up for Mr Cheeks, PMD of EPMD, Smiff N Wesson and MC Craig G near Dallas Texas. Spending the day with guys you grew up listening to has to be one of the most rewarding things the culture has provided. Equally making new fans who love and appreciate what we do is also rewarding especially in these times where the options are endless it seems. It’s a reminder that I should keep going. I grew up with friends in my neighborhood that didnt have the same luck to still be free to chase their dreams. So, I can’t take my talent for granted.
