We were lucky to catch up with Big U on the Beat recently and have shared our conversation below.
Big U on the Beat, appreciate you joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
People have a big issue with assuming things, so people always tend to skew the vision an artist or creative intended. Think it’s something that’s been around since before radio broadcasting and common media we see today. When Van Gogh was alive he was selling paintings for pennies, because they didn’t see or understand his point of view. Only after his passing did everyone realize the art he made came from pain, and peoples lack of understanding. which is why my next project is called Stop Assuming.
Big U on the Beat, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started making music back in 2014 by downloading a demo for FL Studio on my school computer, messing around with the little tools it came with, which led to begging my parents to buy me the program finally after months. then i started recording people from school all of 2015-16 until i met my first friend in music, Play Sensei. one of the most incredible artists i had the opportunity to see him start from the bottom to where he was before he met his untimely death in mid 2020.
Without him i don’t think i’d be where im at today because of the experiences we had together as 18-21 year olds.
Now though i mainly record people at my home studio and i produce for artists, while also mentoring/convincing people thru music.
One of my favorites i’ve nurtured and seen grow in such a short period of time is Mayè. he makes his own beats and records on them too which is essential in the future of the landscape of music
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing the smile on peoples face when you both know you got a hit song together
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve been spat in the face by someone i called a brother over a misunderstanding, and was told i wouldn’t make it in music, and that he would black ball me from the local scene.
Don’t think it worked though since i’ve hosted 5sold out events since then, and i’ve even gone to different cities to perform, while im pretty sure he hasn’t even dropped an album since his first attempt in 2017.
