We were lucky to catch up with Shanteria Franklin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shanteria , appreciate you joining us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I Have a lot of friends who support my Brand . And they also wear my brand on Holidays and Special events . The other day my friend sent me a video of her doing a Tik Tok with my Merch on
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Ever since I was younger I would always make items to go out in. I’ll start off by painting Jean jackets. Customizing them with patches . Then I started making more free spirited items for my audience at the time to wear. And to also relate to. My hoodies and Hats are the most sold out items I’ve ever sold out of . My clothing stands out in Crowds without me even being in the room . The way it is customized to fit and styled to wear makes people want to buy . I also paint my own jeans I’ll buy a pair of plain jeans but hate they are plain and I’ll customize them myself
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Well I started off by working Two jobs . And I’m also still working two jobs . So what I’m saying is you don’t quit your job . Just because you have a clothing line . I use both incomes to Support my brand . So every Friday I will drop 6 hoodies sell my hoodies for 2 for 100 dollars . Then I’ll use my tips from the bar to buy more hoodies so I would not be out completely. My ideas are come from way of feeling . And my Peers because all criticism isn’t bad criticism. It helps you grow more and more each day . So both of my jobs support my brand
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My Thoughts on fashion help me build a impact in my market. I just express everything through the way of Art . People love wearing something different to stand out in . Even when people are not watching they are . I just started wearing my own brand and people started loving it . Sometimes I sell out in a week sometimes business is really slow . But you don’t lose forcus on business being slow . You just come up with more creative ideas and that’s what’s been helping me get by in this industry
