We were lucky to catch up with Hannah Wingfield recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was in grade school I had always gravitated towards the arts. Painting, singing, theater, film, had always intrigued me, and I became involved in all the programs in school to be a part of that. While the preforming arts were really fun, the area where I excelled was in studio art. Graduating high school I decided I wanted to be a professional artist but had no idea how to make that happen. Then, after an associate’s degree for college, and internship at Walt Disney World, and some time to explore my artistic skills, I fell in love with illustration. I finished college later and received my bachelor’s degree in Illustration at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and there I discovered illustration for the music industry. While learning skills for children’s book illustration, I also found a love for designing posters, album covers, and merchandise for those in the music industry as well. Being close to people who are a part of the music industry, allowed me to explore that side. The first time I created a poster was for a band from Texas. That was when I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my art career. I wanted to be an illustrator for bands, musicians, children’s book authors, and anyone else. And that is exactly what I did.
Hannah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Creative Illustrator and I work with folks in the music industry, children’s book authors, and anyone else. I design posters for gigs, album covers, band logos, merchandise design, and more. I also work with children’ s book authors to bring their stories to life, by providing illustrations. Earning my bachelors degree in illustration has given me the education necessary to thrive in my business, communicate with my clients, and provide the artwork that you need for your ideas. I have been able to grow my business over the years and develop wonderful relationships with my clients. With each commissioned project I receive I like to make sure each idea is considered and added in to the best of my ability. My goal is to create something amazing for my clients while incorporating my style and ideas into theirs. I want to make sure each project is perfect for the clients I work with.
I am currently working on illustrating my fourth children’s book with a client and constantly work with bands to create the posters they need for their upcoming shows and merchandise. I work mostly digital but for children’s book illustrations I also work with watercolor.
Working with musicians is probably my favorite part of the job. I love live music and being able to be a part of that and knowing my work is out there making fans excited along with the bands themselves is an amazing feeling. Live music is a place where I feel very comfortable in and it brings me so much joy to be able to help provide designs for the musicians’ cause. I design work for all genres, from country to my favorite, rock and roll.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
For artist, of all types, any support on any way is asbolutly amazing for us. Of course agunging clients and having customers by our creations is a huge way to help support us. However, there are various other ways to support artists for free. Social media is an excellent place to start. By giving us a follow on Instagram, Tik Tok, any other social account would help greatly. Sharing our posts, commenting, and just telling others about our work means a bunch!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an illustrator for me is probably the relationships I get to build with my clients. I live working with people and getting their reactions of joy and excitement when I create something that they end up loving. When they get to input their ideas into the project as well it makes it so much more special. It’s such a great feeling to make something out of nothing for the client.
