We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful John Beijer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with John below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When i was younger i had no idea what i wanted to do, in high school when you can choose your own direction i chose Media just to not have to do a lot of “regular studies” as math and such. So i learned some design and got relly into photography, but also picked up interest for doing graffiti and that did not really help me school wise haha. After a couple years just working regular jobs, i got really sick of it and started studying graphic design. After that i knew that i needed to do something different. But yeah, i guess i always have chose not to do the “boring stuff” and instead choosing to do something fun and something that i enjoy.
John, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Im an artist, with background in graffiti and graphic design. So what i do is basically art but in many forms. I do paint canvases and do illustration commisions but my main focus is to paint large scale murals. Connecting all of the things ive done and learned in my past with different studies, and proffesions. With that i (if youre asking me) developed my own style that is very digital but still hand made and colorful. Very “graphic designey” if that is a word haha
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Just being able to create everyday and work on your own little projects big or small.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think it can be hard for people to understand that you are not in the same rat race as everyone else. My goal every year is not to make more money than last year, if me and my family have it good then i am happy. I do what i do because i love it, not because it is the “smartest career move” or something like that.
