Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Dixon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Initially being asked a question like this, you want to acknowledge all that they’ve done for you! It’s way deeper than that! However, I do appreciate my parents for everything. They’re some pretty dope old folks lol.
My mama passed when I was 19 and with her passing, I started to see everything that she would say or show me. Like she left her mark on people. She was the person that would get you going. One of the main things that was displayed was to treat people better than they treat you. Listen, I didn’t understand that until I had to experience life for myself. She showed me it was okay to take risks! I take a risk every time I touch a strawberry. I’m allergic to them but it’s okay. Not only that, she taught me how to just break out of my shell. Life is so full of opportunities but how would I know that if I’m terrified to interact with others! She did the right thing in so many ways but the thing that stood out most was that she was herself. She didn’t change up for anyone. Debra was Debra from sun up to sun down. She stood on business!
My daddy is my real life hero man! Winston Cofield, I love you so much! My daddy sat me down one time and asked me what my plans were for my life. This was months after my mama passed and he saw that I was out of control. So he wanted to know what my goals were and how I was going to achieve them. Life changing, literally. It’s so crazy cause I try so hard to be like him. He showed me it was okay to “cuss” people out. You know, don’t let people take advantage of you. People will really take advantage of your kindness if you allow it. Gosh man, it’s really so much that I can say because I was really shown how to navigate through life by my parents. My daddy told me one time and one time only, I had to have a plan. It stuck with me. So when I’m planning for different business opportunities, that’s one of the first things I ask!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Jasmine Dixon and I’m the owner of Goodies By Jasmine! My business started out as a hobby. It was something I did for my daughter teachers as well as something that I would do in my free time. It was peaceful and I was proud of it too! So yeah, I would post it on social media, Facebook and Instagram, to show people. My work at the time was hideous but they still showed me love and hyped me up! When I started out, I was living in Orlando. My hometown and where I reside is Eastman, Ga so I was getting a lot of love and support from home and it felt so good! 2016 I went back to Eastman and that’s when I took things a lot more seriously. It was my supporters/family that forced this into a business because really I playing around with it. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come on this journey. I’ve quit mentally so many times. It’s like if I make a simple mistake or the treats don’t look how I “think” they should, I call it quits. I know that’s a poor mindset to have but man when you’re passionate about your work, it gets to you so badly. I just feel like if people are spending their hard earned money with and on my products, then I have to give them the absolute best. Presentation, taste, packaging, etc. They deserve the best of my work! Listen the clients I have are so dope! The energy that they give me shows me that I’m doing this thing right. I’m so hard on myself while working but then I get messages, phone calls, Facebook mentions, etc. it makes it all worth it! I remember delivering to two ladies one time and their energy was so amazing. It was Shakira Gordon and Lakeesha Branch. Mind you, this was two separate occasions but they both stated, “Omg! I’m so excited!” I kid you not, that changed me forever. I say that to myself every single time I’m getting ready to work now! This is really my life. This is my thing! This is really what I do. I take so much pride in my business and I’m just so grateful that I get to work with and for some of the most amazing people.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the main lessons I had to learn was that I can’t do this on my own time. It was really a reality check from this woman named LeNeice Johnson. She was like, “Jas you want to do things on your own time and its not going to work like that.” Yeah, I didn’t want to hear it BUT it was the truth. I had to really look at how I was doing things and it was a punch to the gut. I was not going to succeed at anything the way that I was going. It was a mess. I had to really learn about time management.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The way that I built my audience was just by posting consistently. I knew I was posting all the time because I had someone to tell me that anytime they got on Facebook, they’d see my strawberries. So yeah, I’d highly suggest you to promote your business consistently. Don’t pay attention to the likes or shares. They see you! Promote your business any chance you get!
