Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taiane Bozzay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Taiane thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
When I started my cake business I thought that I just needed to focus on making delicious and beautiful cakes to be successful. I was wrong! Just like other entrepreneurs, I had to learn (and I am still learning) about marketing, sales, building relationships with customers and so much more. Some weeks I spend more time on administrative tasks than baking.
It’s tempting to negotiate on price with potential customers just to get one more sale, but I’ve had to learn to accept that I can’t appeal to every customer. Our cakes are made from scratch with high-quality ingredients and I like to spend time getting the details of each cake just right. If I compromise on price, I risk lowering my quality. It frustrates me sometimes, but I continue to remind myself to stay authentic to my values and brand.

Taiane, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m passionate about food and crafts. I graduated in agribusiness engineering and worked in Brazil as a production engineer at an Italian food company for two years. It was an amazing experience but ultimately I decided to move from Brazil to the USA. The culture shock was huge especially in relation to food. I quickly started to miss the fresh, artisanal, “made by hand” food I grew up with in Brazil. I missed “true food” because I felt like the meals accessible to me were overly processed, sweetened, and artificial. So I started to spend more time cooking and baking, which have always been my favorite hobby.
In 2021 on my husband’s birthday I baked him a cake and it was a hit! People told me I should start selling my cakes. I thought it was a crazy idea, but the concept was exciting to me. I decided to dedicate myself to professional cake courses and experimenting with flavors and designs. That was when our business was “born”.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Email has been very important to us. I usually email them weekly with new products, flavors and designs. During the holidays I send two or three emails a week reminding me of the new dessert collection. This is a great way to keep your customers up to date and always on top of their minds.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of mouth. When you dedicate yourself to making a quality product and are concerned with all stages of the process, from customer service to the final delivery of the product, your customers realize that and recommend you to their friends. It definitely helps a business grow.
