We were lucky to catch up with Joedian Douglas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joedian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My partner and I decided to start our business together. When we started we knew that one day we would want to own a Brick and Mortar store. We didn’t know when but we know it was the goal. As we continue to make new items and explore our ideas we quickly realized that it needed to be sooner than later. Added in with the hardship of me finding a job that was ok with my schedule of taking care of our children, we decided to take the plunge and dove head first in. It is definitely the biggest risk that we have ever taken. We have only been open a little over a month so we are crossing our fingers and hoping for the best.

Joedian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Joedian and I am part owner of Liebe Krafted Designs. I’ve always created for as long as I can remember. Growing up I was always drawing or making something. I have never been one to settle on just one style of art. I am (mainly) a candle maker and resin artist. When we started Liebe Krafted Designs, we were mainly only resin art. We had some candle making supplies sitting from a failed attempt a year before and I decided to pick it up and give it a try and fell in love. We wanted to create candles for those like us who are sensitive to the overwhelming fragrant of some popular candles. Our candles are lighter yet still fragrant. I believe that sets us apart from others along with the creativity we bring to our candles, whether it be in the names of our candles or the looks of our specialty candles. The one thing I’m most proud of is our ability to push through and to continuously come up with some amazing ideas.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think one of the main things society can do to support artists and creatives, is to stop believing that supporting is only purchasing. I believe if we can just tell our friends and neighbors about great creatives they have met or purchased something from would help a lot. Word of moth is so important and sometimes even better than a paid ad.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think one of the main goals that is driving this journey is to be able to give our kids the life we couldn’t afford while also having the freedom of putting family first in all things without worrying about possibly losing employment.
