Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joshua Borrero. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joshua thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
The idea of photography and videography had been on my mind since I was much younger, especially video. I grew up skateboarding, and when one of my friends bought a camera to film with we just couldn’t put it down. It became such a joy to film and put videos together for fun, and it wasn’t until college that I thought back to this moment and decided to get a degree in digital media. I did learn some good skills in school, but I ended up getting some jobs in sales after college to gain some of those skillsets as well. I worked in car sales for a little over a year, and in that time I would dream about building a career in something that I absolutely love to do. At that point I would pick up a few small video and photo gigs here and there, and I began to shift into wanting to pursue creating videos and shooting photos as a potential career. My amazing wife, Rachel, was always so supportive in chasing the dream. I also believe that God gives us passions and dreams for a reason, and I had full faith that I could quit my job and pursue building a business, so that’s what I did. Since then there’s been many tough seasons, but also many times when I knew I did exactly what I was supposed to do. I’m still figuring so many things out, and from a realistic standpoint, what I did was crazy. But God has given me so much peace and reassurance that this business is His, and he’s using me to be a light to people while also providing for my family. It’s been a huge blessing, I get to combine my love for creating and skills I learned in sales to help people using a creative outlet. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
No matter what type of work I’m doing, I focus on building connection and value. I love people, I’m very humorous and relatable, and I desire for people to leave working with me better than when they came in. This year I’ve focused on weddings, some photography but mostly videography, and although I know I can provide a good product in the end, I strive to provide an experience that helps the couple enjoy every moment of the day. The wedding industry is very saturated, and anyone can use a camera to make good videos or take good photos, but I want to leave the night with the bride and groom overly satisfied with their experience working with me than anything else. The experience only heightens the emotions when I can deliver their finished product, and helps them to recall the small moments that would normally get overshadowed by the craziness of the day. I’m all about having fun, making jokes, finding points to relate on, and building relationships. At the end of the day, that goes farther than any service I can provide.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Other than word of mouth and referrals, Instagram has been a great way to receive inquiries from new clients. I’ve already mentioned that the wedding industry is so saturated, especially photo and video. Even though there’s improvements to be made, I try to have my social media reflect my values, work ethic, portfolio, Jesus, and just me as a person. I want my page to be a preview of what it’s like to work with me, and see just how much fun it would be for me to work with you on your wedding day. Being a one man band, I get too caught up with other aspects of the business that social media falls to the side, but it is so important to maintain a presence and be creative in making new ways to share content.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My first client right after I quit my job selling cars, ended up being an absolute nightmare. I encourage anyone, no matter how new you are or how much you might trust someone, to always have contracts in place. What I thought was going to be a full time opportunity ended up leaving me doing a whole weeks worth of work with no pay and feeling beaten down. There were so many red flags, but I was so excited to have a big opportunity after quitting my job, that I became oblivious to everything. I was threatened with a lawyer after submitting my work and trying to receive payment. Not the best feeling, and it took time to rebuild my confidence, but I learned so much, that it ended up being a blessing in disguise. I got reassurance from clients after that my work is good and they’re all satisfied with my skills and what I can do. It boosted my confidence and reminded me of my value, regardless of what happened with my first client. I have value and I do good work. God does everything for a reason, and sometimes it can feel like nothing good can come from certain situations, but I rest in the fact that He’s in control, and He’s molding me into the man He made me to be, and is molding the business to serve and love people well.
