We recently connected with Raven Rajean and have shared our conversation below.
Raven , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
Quality is the foundation of Raven Rajean. Every piece is designed, patterned, cut, and sewn one at a time for each individual client. We thrive on quality in an industry that promotes fast fashion and do so with the intentions of educating our consumers on the luxury of of transitional garments that last thought time. Quality over quantity has always been a priority, when you are confident that your garments are able to withstand life’s challenges, then those emotions exude through you.
Raven , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Going to school for fashion design came forth as an epiphany. Prior to, I was in school for kinesiology, and at the time, it felt like that was the career that I should be pursuing. As my associates degree began to approach, I realized that I was going through the motions of what I assumed I should be doing. I soon came to the realization that my hobbies of cutting up thrifted clothes and dying fabrics was in actuality a passion. I quickly enrolled into a trade school with no prior education in fashion design to unlock the creativity I held within. Like many others I only thought about the beauty of fashion instead of the reality of it (the business side). Going into it I had only wanted to be a creator and didn’t care for the entrepreneurial side of the industry, but with many years of experience in retail I couldn’t help to create a lifestyle with the brand that was being born. It was all to easy of a task to throw at someone else to tackle, so I took my time to learn the good, bad, and ugly of the industry. I came to the conclusion that less is more, I allow my designs to tell a story that best fits the gazing eye. As I still grow in the business of fashion, my designs grow with it.
I find myself spending more time on techniques, and creative differences versus what’s trending for the season. My desire to be better than I was the day before or to prefect a difficult task grows with every garment that is created.
Raven Rajean is a clothing brand that is able to give their clients custom hand made pieces. This means that every part of a garment or look is created for and with the client. This not only gives the client an exclusive feel but, they are given the confidence that the hand made garments are created not only for their body but for their lifestyle.
It’s important to understand that I am not the only creator doing this, I just do it in a way that feels best to me. It is extremely important for our clients to be understood in all aspects and it is as equally important for the brand to move in the way that feels genuine. We won’t flood your emails or social media to draw you in, and we don’t want you feel like you have to fit a certain aesthetic to purchase from us. We want every client to find themselves within the designs that we create. We want you to be exactly who you are and not what society wants to carve you to be.
We are proud of just starting; or having the confidence to take a hobby, idea, and passion, and letting it evolve into the brand that it is, and what it will become.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One thing that was difficult to unlearn was the realization that I couldn’t do it all on my own. Being a 1 woman show makes for a great story, but in actuality collaborating with others that have like minded destinations has been the greatest blessings to come. When you take a step back and map out all of the duties under the umbrella of the fashion industry, it can become overwhelming. I’ve had the pleasure of working along side classmates that have been willing to use their knowledge and skills in growing Raven Rajean. I was determined to do it all on my own, but thankfully, the universe allowed Sierra Joy and I to cross paths. She has brought an extreme amount of ease to creating the brand. At times I felt stuck in my own head about what the website should look like or how marketing should be promoted and it caused me to push those important aspects to the side. With Sierra’s assistance, I’ve been able to put more focus on the design side while trusting that the branding of Raven Rajean projects it’s true form.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As I’ve mentioned before, I had absolutely no knowledge in fashion design when I started school in 2016. I was excited to learn about what ignites the passion I have had since I was a kid, but it was extremely discouraging to start from ground zero while others around me had begun long before. As the years passed and I gained knowledge in garment construction, I understood this would take more than a desire to make cool clothes. The skill level that I possessed was still very green compared to what my imagination wanted to create. It was very disappointing when a garment or look didn’t come together as I would hope for, but every time I sat at a sewing machine I worked on perfecting the smallest of details. I had to be okay with starting over multiple times and rotated my mindset to enjoy the learning process instead of being frustrated by it. My excitement grew along side skills that I was obtaining. Although i continue to learn everyday, I don’t allow what I haven’t learned yet to stop me from continuing on my journey.
