Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to KJ Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

KJ, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

The project I am currently working on is a very important one to me. Most of my comedy has been more satirical and punchline heavy. This one is a show about the struggles of a young black man battling poverty. Its special because it was me lol, I spent a long time expecting things to come my way and waiting which is a huge mistake many of us make in our quest.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

This month marks my 12th years as a stand up comedian. I have performed all ovre the country and worked with russell Simmons All Def Digital, writing sketches and starring in some. I also wrote a series of Sketches in college that had some content featured on MTV. I have also performed on TBS national comedy competition Finalist as well as Comedy time and more small credits. In film I have worked on Superfly, and recently on The color purple- upcoming. and BMF

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?

Stop treating comedians as if they are politicians. The attempt at censorship on comedy is causing harm to the profession. Trying to make an extremely educated people who thrive off of sympathy laugh is a hard thing to do. When you act as if someone wrote jokes in their house to come attack you personally it just perverts what the art is. I despise this deeply.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

That we are all going to make it. This is the most untrue statement made. We are not all going to make it big, a select few will work hard enough and the opportunities may or may not come. I have met many very talented individuals who we all think should be bigger then they are. ie. Bernie Mac – Bernie starred in 2 movies.
