We recently connected with Tiffanie Quinn and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tiffanie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
If I could go back in time and start my creative career sooner, I definitely would. Even though I started my academic art journey in 2016, I did not start sharing my personal art or building a business until 2019. In 2019, I entered a deep depression and started painting self-portraits in my spare time to depict how I was feeling. It became a very therapeutic process for me. Even though I was proud of my art, I never shared it online out of fearing what others would think. I was constantly comparing myself to large Instagram accounts run by artists who were more successful than I was, I would look at their accounts and think “I don’t look like them. My art doesn’t look like theirs. How can I possibly build an audience like that?”
Eventually, I started sharing my paintings after getting some encouragement from my friends and the feedback was amazing. I realized that my journey was my own and that I had to start somewhere. Looking back, I do wish I had started sooner. I would have built my skills more, learned more, and have a greater audience by now. However, I think it is important to acknowledge that we are all on our own personal journies and should only compare our growth to our past. With that being said, I don’t have any regrets and I am grateful that I decided to put myself out there. Without those moments, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Tiffanie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
House of Quinn is an art and fashion lifestyle brand that caters to audiences who value a fun and inclusive space for all people. As the artist behind the work, I aim to implement ideas of healing, support for groups who feel unsupported and creating happiness in everyday life. My artwork explores topics surrounding healing, the experiences of people of color, sexual assault awareness, and reaching your highest self. I explore these topics through fashion, interactive art shows, paintings, home decor and functional art. Additionally, I love creating custom pieces for clients and bringing happiness to their homes through art.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is definitely seeing viewers resonate with my pieces in a way that gives them a sense of healing or belonging. Hearing people say my pieces helped them heal, share their stories or even that they can relate to my experiences is very comforting and motivating. These are the most important moments to me and definitely encourage me to keep creating.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Any books by Austin Kleon – He finds easy ways to motivate artists and puts them in a very easy-to-read format. His were some of the first self-help books I read and I absolutely love them.
When I was in undergrad, my professors always made me read Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. Even though I was tired of reading it, the book has a lot of simple but mindblowing advice and brings attention to a lot of the obstacles we face as creatives.
