We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mélissa Baptiste a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Mélissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?

My first introduction to photography was in High School, I took a digital photography class in 12th grade where I learned the fundamentals of photography. Knowing what I know now I would have pushed myself more with the resources that I had at hand to speed up my learning process. The skills that were most essential and that are still very important till this day in my journey are my ability to multitask, my attention to details and my power to adapt analytically. The biggest obstacles that stood in my way of learning more at the beginning of my journey was the lack of time and the lack of financial resources.

Mélissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is Mélissa, a photographer and creative entrepreneur based in New York and the owner of MelissaBStudios. MelissaBStudios is a company that focuses on various elements of visual arts such as photography, creative direction, videography, designs, graphics, and educational creative business content. “Your Business is a Journey” my journey started out of pure passion and is now flourishing into something amazing. Being the business savvy woman that I am, this passion of mine quickly transitioned into my company and brand MelissaBStudios. MelissaBStudios is known for capturing the essence of individuals in beautiful portraits that convey the person’s individuality and emotions. I create visual content and digital content for brands, upcoming artists, designers, stylists, makeup artists, startup companies, student-led organizations, nonprofits, politicians and many more. Though I am known as a portrait photographer, I cover all occasions.

Is there a mission driving your creative journey?

The mission is to inspire fellow women entrepreneurs to step into those unconventional industries to create successful women led businesses. Success is a relative term, however if you achieve your personal business goals and you’re happy doing what you love then I think that is success. For me success is seeing the growth of my business throughout the years in my creative journey. I picked up a camera as a creative outlet to express myself; six years later this beautiful hobby of mine is flourishing into something amazing and it’s only the beginning. My creative journey had a lot of ups and downs, however through it all success showed itself in the small and big wins that MelissaBStudios accumulated. My creative journey is driven by my love for visual arts which is continuously fueled by my business motto ‘Capturing Life, Making Memories, Creating Art’.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

For me the most rewarding aspect of being creative is having people specifically reach out to me and work with me for my style, and my expertise knowledge that I bring to the table when it comes to being a creative entrepreneur. Seeing my clients’ reactions as we are working on a project, and their positive feedback as they receive the final format of their project really touches my heart. Being a creative and a business owner has its fair share of pressure, it can get very overwhelming at times however the positive feedback and words of encouragement from my clients, family, and friends definitely keeps me going.
