We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonelle Paulette a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jonelle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Since I was a kid, I was always into art. Painting, photography, dancing & pottery were my forte. My art was actually chosen to be in multiple Museums in FortLauderdale (my hometown) Not to mention, my mother was extremely artistic and she still is. My mother made jewelry and would come to my school to teach my class art of all forms.. To top it off, I danced Ballet en Pointe and performed in the Florida Theatre up until I was 16 or 17.
So basically, my whole upbringing was always artistic.
But here’s when I knew I needed to make art for my career- when all I wanted to do was learn eyelash extensions and do them on other people. I had been applying my own strip lashes for years before I started getting my lashes done in 2017. From then, I knew there was no other career path for me.
By now, it’s no surprise that I am an artist in my own brand. I make quality eyelash extension art that lasts and makes other women feel beautiful and empowered.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started getting into eyelash extensions in 2017 when I dropped out of college and was pregnant. I saw it as an upcoming beauty fad and I quickly caught onto the trend. I had been eventually curious and started applying my own eyelash extensions at home. I posted a video on YouTube in 2018/2019 it’s still there, actually.
I was 19, single & just had my first child. That’s when I decided to quit my life and go to esthetician school learning Facial Specialty and untimely- Eyelash Extensions.
I had worked at a local salon and had every job in the book. I kept learning all that I could and I loved my position. But after a toxic work environment, I was quickly pushed out on my own. When I started gaining identity in my lash artistry, I knew I had to leave to create & follow my own Vision.
I took a leap of faith and it brought me here.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are tons of creative resources I wish I knew earlier on in my journey.
One of them was taking advantage of quality eyelash extension training and education.
This is a creative resource that more artists need to jump on, especially the ones that teach professionalism.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to learn from someone who has already done it.
Education is something no one can take away from you and you can go so far with what you know.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative may sound obvious but it is that I get to have fun and create art for a living. It’s hard work, but the most rewarding. I get to see what I’ve created posted in magazines and changing other peoples lives by teaching them what I do and how I do it.
I feel very blessed and rewarded. Like I am following my true calling.
