Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Caleb Lucas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Caleb, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My creative journey started in 2012 when I was hired on at church as their creative assistant. I had never touched a camera, designed a single graphic, or ever imagined this would be the line of work I’d move into. Can y’all image the imposter syndrome I had back then! But sometime shortly after I was hired, my boss handed me a camera and told me to go learn how to use it. So, that’s what I did. I realized now that it was in that moment that my life was set on a creative trajectory. I quickly fell in love with the idea of creative expression which led me to graphic design, video editing, etc. It was beautiful and difficult all at the same time but I’m thankful that it’s set me on the path I am now. I also can’t forget to mention that I have had so many incredible people throughout the last decade teach me and pass along their creative genius and to them I’m eternally grateful. oh, and Youtube has been my most familiar tutor.
I’m really grateful for the pace in which my creative journey has developed because even though I’ve gotten to do so much, I don’t feel burnt our of demystified by it. The idea of creating still feels like wide open spaces. Don’t get me wrong, there’s been moments of wanting to hang it up but overall, I’m still incredible inspired!
I think one of my most prized skills and traits that I’ve picked up over the last decade, is the ability to figure things out and see things to completion. I’ve come face to face with a lot of challenges and things I don’t know how to do but one thing I’ve learned it that everything can be figured out and If I am willing to put in the work, I can accomplish my goal. As someone who wrestles with self doubt and fear, this skill that I’ve had to develop, has been vital.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
If you and I have not had the chance to meet… Hi, my name is Caleb Lucas!
First and foremost, I’m a son to two incredible parents and a brother to a sister who is one of my best friends. My family is gold and I would not be where I am in life without their unending support!
I was born and raised in Texas, spent some time in California for school but meandered my way back to Texas in 2018. I LOVE the mountains so I do struggle a little in these here flatlands. The dream is to be smack dab in the middle of the ocean and the mountains… one day! *crosses fingers*
When people ask what I’m about or what I do, I usually say I’m a creative because it seems to sum up a lot of things I either love to do or offer professionally (Photography, Graphic Design, Web Design, Branding, Murals, traditional art, poetry, songwriting, etc.). But I will say it took me a long time to allow myself to truly feel like a creative. That felt like a word reserved for the Vincent Van Goghs of our world. But through some self discovery, I’ve learned to lean into it!
As a creative professional, I’ve come to appreciate that I am a jack of many trades as it’s given me the ability to help loads of different people either launch their company, remember precious moments, give their company a face lift, etc. This is probably the enneagram 2 in me speaking but, It’s a real treat to be a support for people. I get a sort of high being the person that helped someone’s dream, big or small, come true.
I started my creative journey over 10 years ago but to be honest, I got into this industry by accident. When I was 19, a church in Sugar Land, Texas gave me a chance by hiring me as a creative assistant when I had absolutely no business in that job. I literally had no idea what I was doing. Over the course of a couple months, I became enamored by this world that opened up to me as my boss and I created graphic after graphic, videos after video. It was a ride that I didn’t really expect to get on and I’m so grateful. So I’d say that Creativity sort of fell into my lap and I fell in love with it in return. That time at that small church in Sugar Land was one of the most pivotal times of my life and quite literally sent me on the trajectory that I’m on now.
When it comes to my craft, I’m most proud of how my designs, photos, videos, etc… make my clients feel. In the end, as a creative professional, my clients’ satisfaction is my biggest priority. Now, casually, the lasting emotion and wonder that my art can invoke in my friends, family, and community… is priceless.
Something that I’ve come to value as a business person is the ways in which I can do it uniquely. You see, I’ve worked in loads of industries. Food, Service, Retail, Antiques, and Radio… Oh and I can’t forget those summers I was a pool monitor. Yikes. But, one thing I gathered over my years in various industries is that there’s certain ways to act, behave, or show up to the table that are considered “professional”. I can understand why employers require these things of their team but what it doesn’t factor in is the ways that a person can benefit an environment when they are totally themselves. I want to be part of rewriting the stereotype of what a business person or entrepreneur looks like. What I love about what I do as a creative and independent professional, is that I can create the experience my clients are going to have. One that is professional and credible but also personable and human.
So in the same light, I always want clients and potential clients to know that I’m with them in their endeavor and that I’m a safe person to journey with as they take the risk. I value honesty, integrity, and trust as I help clients see their dreams come to life! I also just want my clients to enjoy working with me as I like to think I’m pretty fun :)

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would say that there are a few things that feel the most rewarding as an artist. One being the simple act of, at the end of the project, taking it all in and allowing yourself to be proud of what you created. I actually think it’s essential to the creative process.
I think sometimes people don’t totally understand the value of seeing things come to completion and what it does for you as a person. I mean just imagine your dad… He’s excited about the new remodel in the house and has a passioned to get started but gets into the heat of the project and loses heart. Then 2-5 years later, that new floorings is half installed or that wall is half painted. The true bummer is that we neglect ourselves not only of the beautiful remodel but also the absolute delight and satisfaction of a job completed. There’s just something to it.
Another thing that is incredibly rewarding about being a creative is knowing that I created something out of nothing. Something now exists that didn’t before. It’s wild!
Lastly, one thing I love about bring a creative is seeing the world in color. In these trying and difficult times, it’s embarrassingly easy to get stuck in ruts of darkness but, one thing that helps me remain above water is slowing down to remember that there’s beauty all around us.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One resource that I wish I knew about earlier on in my creative journey were the people I had access to. For many years I didn’t know the value of just asking someone for their time to pick their brain for business, creative, personal wisdom. Most people are more than willing to open up and share the successes and struggles if it means that they can help someone go way further than they did.
Currently, I’m surrounded by so many incredible people that have keys for me to go to new and greater levels and If I don’t take the risk to ask for help, I’ll majorly miss out! If you ask not, you get not.
