Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mel Willis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?

I believe one of the biggest keys to success is persistence. It’s not a question of “if” you’ll get knocked down – it’s a question of “when”. Getting back up and moving forward is the only way to make progress in your field.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

As a lover of design, I accepted a job working for a local architecture firm, which first introduced me to the challenge and reward of photographing architecture and interiors. I traveled the United States and Canada to document the firm’s designs for use in marketing, branding, and award submissions. My responsibilities for the firm grew to include graphic design, visual branding, and web design, but those same expanded responsibilities took me further away from my one true calling. And so after nearly eleven years in the industry I made the difficult but confident decision to step out on my own and devote my time and energy to architectural photography. With over 14 years of experience in documenting design, I pride myself on helping designers reach a wider audience through creating images that lend themselves to being shared by individuals and publications.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

That knowledge I gained from working in the design industry for several years was paramount. Fully understanding how designers utilize photography to market their business and pursue new work is really helpful when discussing how to help my clients obtain their goals.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

Being able to live my passion daily and to use the skills I’ve honed to help other creatives succeed is unbelievably rewarding.
