We were lucky to catch up with Que Burns recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Que, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I’ve been passionate about aesthetics my entire life. I really think it’s hereditary to some degree.
I come from two parents who were really in tune with how they presented themselves in and out of the public’s eye. I can remember my father having the most organized sock drawer you could imagine. He had these little plastic sock locks.
I think the purpose of them was to keep your socks together when they were being washed, but my father used them for organizing his sock collection. They were bright and colorful and were the main reason I even looked in his sock drawer, to begin with, My mother loved prints. In her closet, she would have a massive wardrobe with colorful accents.
Every colorful accent had a pair of heels to match. She kept a really tidy home environment. Everything had its proper place and we all knew better than to remove things from that place. I grew up on the west side of Chicago, and so I have to give 1/4 credit to my city. It is a fast-paced place and everybody dresses to the nines when we pop out! The last 25% is all me!
From the way, I dress to my hair, right down to my home and car. It’s not just an ‘image’ thing. This is really me in real life. My kids often make fun of me saying, “Mama you’re the only person I know who gets dressed up to go check the mailbox”. For me, the aesthetics allow me to think clearly. When I was working in the office, my desk stayed clear and neat – regardless of the amount of paperwork I was responsible for.
Some people need coffee to get their day started, I need a clean slate to function properly. From the time I got my own place and even before then, decorating or ‘styling’ my personal space, has always been a part of my life. My stepfather was a contractor by trade. I remember we moved into a home that had an unfinished basement. I knew he was good with his hands, and so I asked if he would build me a room in the basement.
He told me to give him an idea of what I wanted it to look like and he would make it happen. I asked him if I could come with him to select the flooring and wall panels and that was my first project. I was 17 years old at the time and it’s been my thing ever since!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are an innovative Interior Styling company who specializes in creating bold, classy and functional home spaces for our clients. Oftentimes, busy professionals lack the time to really get the focus or even know where to begin on their revamp projects. We help them get the design plan figured out, walking with them through every step. Through personal one-on-one meetings, phone calls, emails & texts, we lay out the vision, the goal, the budget and the timeline to ensure the project’s success. Nothing feels better to us than relieving the stress of a client by handling all the details and steps to creating a space they are happy to come home to.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
Ginger and I have been friends for years. We instantly connected right away after working at the same agency in Law Enforcement.
We saw how complementary our skill sets were and how successful we could be professionally as a team—and the rest is history!
Ginger would probably describe us as “the same person”. We’re both logical thinkers who are passionate about our work, but I’m a little more Zen. We both get inspired by vision, but it’s really important that I see the proof in the numbers.
Ginger agrees; We’re both so passionate about what we do. We feed off each other, and inspire one another. We get to bounce ideas off of each other, that probably wouldn’t make sense to other people. The best thing about being business partners is that most of the projects we work on together feel simply like “girl time”.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Definitely, 1000% word of mouth. Our clientele is strictly – Each one teach one. There is no other way we would have one client if it weren’t for referrals.
