We were lucky to catch up with Matia Buggs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matia, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I actually came up with the idea in grad school while attending American University in 2016. I had originally made Innovative Minds Media to be P3 (Picture Perfect Promotions). The idea behind it was the company being a pitch consulting company for local talent, including advertisers, film students, and professionals who are working on a film treatment, business plan, or script. The second being a video-production company to assist clients with shooting and editing film sizzles, trailers, or pilot episodes. I did some rebranding to the idea in 2018 to focus on entrepreneurs who were launching businesses who needed assistance with getting their brands off the ground. I also want to say a special thanks to everyone who has supported, but most of all, my husband, Horace. He’s amazing, and always so comforting and kind! He’s my go-to for anything, and I truly adore him. You always need a supportive spouse when you’re an entrepreneur!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a native Washingtonian, a strategic communications specialist, visual design specialist, and brand mentor with over ten years of experience in publications, program development, and strategic communications in both the government and nonprofit field.
I have worked and collaborated with several brands in Washington, DC, from strategic development to website design and content creation. I have developed a niche for branding and established Innovative Minds Media, DC’s premiere branding agency for creative entrepreneurs. With IMM, we build websites, manage social media, and give creative brand consulting that helps entrepreneurs scale their businesses.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s okay to sleep! And not when you’re dead LOL. Mental wellness and wholeness matters. When I was 22, I launched a fashion and entertainment magazine titled Dollhouse, and worked very hard on it for four years. Naturally, I burned myself out, so my advice to entrepreneurs now that I’m 35 is this: “When you need to take a break, take a break!”
How did you build your audience on social media?
It wasn’t an overnight thing! It took me four years to build to 2000+ followers. Social media is so vast and everchanging, that it requires some form of innovation from the entrepreneur. Get up on the latest trends, and always remember to be yourself! People are invested in you before they’ll ever invested in anything you have to offer.
