We recently connected with Alicia Dawson and have shared our conversation below.
Alicia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
So, let’s take it back to 2006, back to where BraidedbyLic was just developing.
I grew up in a home that always had plenty of children running around since my mom was a home child care provider at the time. I had plenty of friends, which was fun. My friends and I were always either playing with each other’s hair or I would just be playing in their hair, while sometimes getting in trouble for it lol!
As time went by my passion for doing hair started to grow tremendously but I never could really get into hair coloring or hair cutting. I was always focused more on braiding. Trying to learn the different techniques and methods were always so challenging but so rewarding for me once I got it! That’s when I realized braiding was my forte and I immediately began to act on it! I started practicing on my family, friends, children in need, or anyone who wouldn’t mind me trying different styles on them and would appreciate it.
Each time I practiced I would get better and better, I even practiced while enrolled in college for something totally different (Culinary Arts). When I graduated college and got my degree in culinary management I decided that I wanted to take my passion more serious and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I do what I love on a everyday basis now and that has to be the best part for me!
Alicia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Alicia Dawson, I’m 22, and I was born & raised in Fort Myers, Florida. So as you guys know from the previous question, I’ve been passionate about doing hair since a little child but professionally I got into the braiding industry about 2 years ago. When I first started, not knowing as much as I know now, It was really hard for me as with any business! You get people that want to help you and people that don’t. That’s when I really had to discipline myself to not get discouraged and to keep going. I’ve had many early days and late nights but every day I still wake up and do what I love while creating a positive environment for both me and my clients. As a full time braider, I provide services such as: feed-in braids, knotless braids, stitch braids, tribals braids and etc. To me, each individual style is like a work of art and I always encourage my clients and/or future clients to get creative! The styles I offer are easily customizable.. clients just need to share their vision with me and watch me bring it to life! I believe that this is something that separates me from other braiders and continues to do so.
I am most proud of my ability to smile through the good and the bad, and I want my potential clients/ followers to know that I’m the braider that cares! I’m excited to see many new faces and enter new doors!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Social media! The socials are a great way to growing your clientele because it has a fast reach! And to anyone who is just starting, please don’t be scared to post because of the amount of likes you do or don’t get! Trust me someone always sees it!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honestly, my personality! My clients are always laughing in my chair and I’m naturally a kind spirit. I just let my work speak for itself!
