We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jaimie Bailey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jaimie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
In my experience in this life so far I would have to say opening a brick and mortar business is one of the biggest risks you can take. To be a leader of a team, have overhead, create content, keep a quality product flowing and maintain it is all somehow to be done in a days work. However, when you are so passionate about not only this community, but your method and helping people realize what they can accomplish on a bike in just 45 minutes left me with no choice but to jump in head first to this “risk”.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have had the honor of working through quite a few professions so far….From surf shops to pastry kitchens and bakeries- it has been by far the most satisfying to be in the world of wellness. The physical and mental components of it landed me to feel at home in the sweaty and gritty nature of it all. I found indoor cycling when boutique fitness was just getting its groove in NYC back in 2010. I was trained by the top in the industry and mentored by women I respect and value to this day. I was able to train new instructors, mentor them and create a continuing education/management role. I dove back in and went to school for holistic nutrition. Being equipped with the experience and education I have been able to gather over the years has led me to want to share all of this valuable information to keep leveling up and becoming the best versions of ourselves! I felt driven to create spaces where movement and community thrive. Along side a few partners, we opened a gym in Brooklyn in 2019 which quickly grew into a success. My family and I had always dreamed of moving to Encinitas, CA so in July 2021, we took the leap. I knew I could carefully craft a special place right on Hwy 101 just a few blocks from the beach with sweat, strength and connection as a heartbeat. It was here, Grind House Cycle was born. After opening our doors earlier this year in March, we’ve continued to grow and fully immerse ourselves in the surrounding community.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
This one is pretty simple for me. It all comes down to sticking to your “why” and core values. When you are so deeply rooted in your mission its infectious to our riders as to who we are and what we stand for. We expect the best in ourselves and everyone around us which is the clearest path to a stronger community and ourselves.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We opened our gym in Brooklyn and just a few months later we entered a global pandemic. We were shutdown with a massive overhead and decided to put our heads together to come back stronger. After 6 months of closed doors, we were able to reopen with a more unified team, a sparkling clean gym, tons of new classes and a better sense of what we wanted to provide to our community.
