We recently connected with Devin Giovacchini and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, thanks for joining us today. Often the greatest growth and the biggest wins come right after a defeat. Other times the failure serves as a lesson that’s helpful later in your journey. We’d appreciate if you could open up about a time you’ve failed.
When I began my career in Real Estate I thought that I could apply many of the tools and sales techniques I had learned from 16 years as a Navy Recruiter. I also started with a mindset of how much money I could make as a real estate broker. What I quickly realized is that helping someone in the process of selling or buying a home is more of a marathon and less a sprint and money is a byproduct of taking great care of people. I needed to have a paradigm shift. If I am truly taking care of my clients I must first focus on their needs, their timeline and less on what money I made in the process. Once I realized these truths, I started to see much more success in helping my clients achieve their goals with the added bonus of achieving mine.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
After spending the vast majority of my 24 years in the US Navy, recruiting and managing a recruiting force there came a time I needed to shift to another industry. As I approached my Navy Retirement I determined I wanted to determine my value, not allow someone else to dictate what I was worth. As I looked around I realized I was adept at helping people navigate a path from one place to another. Real estate in my area of North Carolina, has been quite vibrant and I loved the idea of helping someone achieve the dream of homeownership, so I studied and became a Real Estate Broker. After achieving success for the past 13 years, helping 100’s of families, I would have to say what Ive learned is that its important to focus on the following: 1. Keep your clients point of view yours, you represent them and their goals.
2.Always begin with the intent of getting 2 parties together to achieve a mutually beneficial conclusion.
3. Keep cool and be the calm in the storm.
With the help of my oldest daughter working in my business with me, the support of my wife, 2 other daughters and other family and friends we will pride ourselves in following these simple guidelines.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2009 I finished a career in the US Navy. I started as an Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic, with jobs as a VIP Aircraft handler in Washington DC, aircraft component repair person, Helicopter Minesweeping Small Boat crewman. The final 16 years of my career was as a Recruiter and Trainer. As I approached my retirement date I made the decision. to enter the field of real estate as a real estate agent and broker. At the time it seemed a natural transition, however the urgency of what a good real estate agent must do compared to a Navy Recruiter was quite different. Both fields have the job of taking people from point A to point B, keeping the movement forward, problem solving and helping keep our applicant or client focused on the finish line. Where I needed to adjust my thinking was that in real estate the customer/client was going to be my neighbor, I would need to rely on an organic referral network if I was to have long term success.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me was that I focused on a smaller geographic zone than many others. I made it my mission to reflect my town was in fact, my town. I was and am quite passionate about my community and let people know. I also used social media to spread the message of positivity, never focusing on negative community news, there are other outlets for that negativity. This approach made me an expert about my community which strengthened my reputation positively.
