We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Margaret Phiri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Margaret below.
Margaret, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
I intentionally started taking vacations in 2019. I never took vacations for 10+ years because I felt I had the freedom to get away for a weekend if I wanted to. However, I never would actually do it.
So in 2019 after a short trip with friends, I put it on my calendar twice a year to take a week’s vacation. Now, do I take my laptop, yes I do. I have not graduated to leave it at home yet so I can truly disconnect but I limit the amount of time allow myself to check on projects while on vacation.

Margaret, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Back in 2008, I was laid off and then started with mPrint Creations full-time. They then contracted often me to work on projects and that went on for a period of 5 years and I loved the freedom and ease of working for myself. I developed my business model around that and created websites. I have not looked back since.
This year I started my podcast, mPress Conversations with Maggie besides mPrint Creations. My focus is on talking to women about their business struggles and challenges. When it comes to women in business, alot of women do not start because of fear or lack of confidence within themselves. I talk to women who have been in business for a minimum of 5 years or have made 6 figures plus.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I actually started while working full time so it was my side hustle and then circumstances forced me (got laid off) to go full-time into it. However, I was really lucky because my initial start-up costs were paid for while I was in a full-time position.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Not listening to my instinct about a client or project. Not all money is good money. That is a rule I will not break for myself. Initially I would accept all projects and all clients. After a situation where a client was rude and disrespectful, I refunded their deposit and did not work with that client again. Peace of mind is so much better than getting money and being unhappy working with people that do not respect you.
