We were lucky to catch up with Hallie Avolio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hallie, appreciate you joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
In January 0f 2021 I felt called to really serve my audience in an unorthodox way. I knew how bad the world had been hit with the pandemic and the economy was shaky at best. I also knew that people were hurting and suffering from anxiety and mental illness and I wanted to spread as much joy and love as possible. I decided to offer many of my programs at absolutely no cost to support my customers and serve as many people as I could. I knew that my teachings and coaching would help people in so many ways and it felt like the right thing to do. I felt so fortunate to make this pivot for about 6 months and lean into my role of service leadership through my business.
Hallie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My professional background is in B2B sales and human resources. I worked both in the corporate space and in the small business space for 20 years doing sales and HR.
I also have 3 children and spent much of my 30’s having my kids, staying home with them part-time, and taking care of my household.
By the time my youngest was 2 I started to realize that I had to figure out my next move before he went to kindergarten. I ended up finding myself frustrated, depleted, burned out, and stressed. Instead of seeking help, I went the other route and got myself in a tangle of self-sabotage and bad habits.
After about 3 years of attempting to run away from my life and nearly destroying everything I had built, I realized I had 2 choices. Completely self destruct or figure it out. I chose the latter… and I know it was divinely guided.
I started to do the work. Take care of my physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. I read countless books, listened to podcasts, went to therapists and coaches.
I then realized I had a story to tell and more importantly, a job to do to help other people get out of their own way like I did. I felt called to coaching, guiding and teaching. The more I leaned into spiritual practices and manifestation techniques, the more I realized I had a gift for helping others find their purpose.
Sassy Healthy Fit was born in 2019 and now serves hundreds of thousands of people all over the world through 1:1 coaching, online courses, social media content, workshops, books, etc.
What sets me apart from other spiritual leaders and coaches is.. ME! There is no one else like me and that is my gift. I have an energy that people are drawn to. I am real. I authentically connect. I follow up. I respond to e-mails and DMs. I read the comments and reply from my heart.
The main content of my work is shared by many others in this space. However, the way that I teach, coach, and guide is a powerful combination of energy, love, spirituality, and magic that you won’t find elsewhere.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I love social media! I didn’t always, but I have found my rhythm. Over the past 3 years I have organically grown my audience to nearly 350K (collectively) and I keep going because I love it.
The number one secret I tell everyone is … CONSISTENCY IS KEY!
It sounds so cliche and simple but that is it. Show up consistently and you will grow.
I’ve taken classes, tried different techniques, followed the gurus. It always comes back to deciding that you are going to show up and then doing it.
I am most proud of my TikTok following because at over 310K, I have generated 75% of my clients, sponsored brand deals, and countless testimonials.
My best advice is find what you love and then do it everyday. And repurpose your content! I post my TikTok videos on Instagram and YouTube. My posts on Facebook double up on LinkedIn. People need to see something 7-10 times before it sticks.
The story we tell ourselves that “I can’t post it again! They’ve already seen it” is just an excuse. Even if they have seen it, who cares? It reinforces your message.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
Like many business owners, I found myself looking for a quick fix for success. I knew there had to be some “magic pill” that I was missing to experience the success “everyone” else was having.
I constantly got side-tracked with offers from coaches and strategists to help my business grow.
Then, one day, a woman approached me on LinkedIn with an offer to get me on top 5% podcasts to grow my business. I was told if she accepted me, she would do 95% of the work, I would just have to show up to interviews, and the high ticket clients would roll in.
Her investment was a “deal” at only $8000. It was more than I had ever invested in my business. I thought about it. Journaled about it. Went for it.
It was NOT what I expected. That 95% amount of work she was supposed to do, was more like 50%. I had to research, complete forms, create videos for pitches. She was extremely slow in getting back to me and what was supposed to take 3 months was hardly in effect after 90 days.
Finally, after 6 months, I knew I had to walk away. My energy was drained, I was getting more and more frustrated and I knew this wasn’t for me. So did my close friends who had to listen to me complain about it all the time!
I wrote her an e-mail and said I would no longer work with her because she didn’t live up to my expectations. I told her that I would like to be refunded for at least 50% of my investment because that was all I got out of it (and that was generous… it was more like 30%!).
I was pleasantly surprised when she did refund me 50% of my money. But the best part was knowing that I stood in my truth and did what I had to for me.
And I learned an important lesson. There is no magic pill. Being an entrepreneur takes work. And time. And it all comes together when it should!
