We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Liz Linder a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
A meaningful project that stands out is a recent one, where I had an opportunity to capture fathers, children, and reunited families to strengthen the bonds between them. Father’s Uplift, an advocacy organization founded by Charles Daniels and Samantha Fils-Daniels has a mission to change the world by fostering a sense of resilience and connection between fathers and their children. The opportunity to elevate family connections along with our client’s visual communication aligns with our values and serves the greater community. Seeing an emotional response to these images gives me a sense of hope and purpose. A single frame can make a lasting impression – it can stop time, capture emotions, spark ideas, and inspire action. These images have the power to shape perception and make a difference in not only a viewer’s relationship with a subject, but a subject’s relationship with themself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a Boston-based photographer with a passion for capturing portraits and telling stories. I’ve worked with iconic personalities such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, Carly Simon and Quincy Jones, and with clients ranging from NPR to IDEO, capturing portraits and illustrating stories at institutions like Harvard and MIT. I enjoy collaborating – with a close-knit team and clients and strive to make every shoot intimate with a sense of spontaneity.
I have a liberal arts degree with a focus in fine art, which gave me a broader perspective than simply going to art school. I use problem-solving strategies learned over the years to communicate visually. From still images to motion, and from corporate marketing to campus culture (including diverse work for artists, writers and thinkers), I aspire to illuminate, communicate and connect – to tell candid stories with lasting emotional impact.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Analog to digital was a big transition. I started in film, and this created natural limitations in timing, turnaround and quantity. A simple shoot that now takes a couple of hours from the first exposure to delivery could take up to a week in the days of film development and snail mail. When the first digital cameras came out, quality was also an issue — and it was essential to shift the business to meet the immediate needs of clients while keeping in mind that smart phones today are far superior to early digital cameras. This first initial pivot set the stage for ongoing rapid shifts in tools and technology.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I use photography to connect – with peers, subjects, clients, parts of myself, and with the viewer. Framing a moment builds connections between people, places and relationships — creating the possibility of seeing ourselves and our futures in a new light.
