We recently connected with Tyler Miles Lockett and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler Miles, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Diving deep into illustrating my own book on Greek mythology has been such a fun journey as I get to learn about the myths and tales and history of ancient Greece as I do research to Illustrate them. So for me, picking a project where I can learn about a new topic and grow is the ideal project.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Tyler Miles Lockett, an award winning Illustrator hoping to breathe fresh life into the magic and mystery of ancient mythology and classical literature. Ive always been passionate about art, growing up drawing warriors and fantasy landscapes, watching 80’s fantasy movies, video games and 90’s Japanese cyberpunk OVA’s Animation.
After studying Illustration at Parsons school of design in NYC, I worked as a senior concept artist on American Mcgee’s “Alice: Madness Returns” video game. For the last eight years I have lived in over twelve countries as a world traveling digital nomad. I do freelance Illustration for book covers and other products within the mythology/Literature sphere, but I’m most excited about my personal book project i’m writing and illustrating on Greek Mythology coming in 2023.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think just being very intentional with my goals and putting in the daily discipline and time to reach those shorter term goals. a year ago i sat down and laid out a framework for my artistic style by creating the rules and boundaries to keep my style consistent, as well as setting out clear and realistic goals about speed to clearly define my potential for output.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think the lesson I had to unlearn is that artists need to be hired by a company to be successful and make a living. It’s not true anymore. With social media, poster print on demand services, an artist can navigate to find his audience directly and offer products of their personal work. Thanks to the internet, social media, and print on demand services, it’s never been a better time to be an artist with a specific voice. Your audience is out there waiting to discover your work!
