We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lekhya Bellamkonda a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lekhya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am happier as an artist than as a quality engineer on most days. I do wonder what it would be like to have a regular job as a creative. The last time that this thought came to my head was when I was on maternity leave and wanted to have a flexible job so I can be with my baby.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a self taught artist and I am trained in multiple Indian art forms as well as western art forms. I provide dot mandalas, zen doodles, tanjhore paintings, warli drawings, clay molding, pottery, jewelry making, origami and so much more. What sets me apart from other artists is that I provide very customized artwork for clients and learn on the job if needed. I’m most proud of my recent illustrated book called Linguistic Therapy. I hand drew and painted all the illustrations for that poetry novel and it was published on Amazon in summer 2022.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is to see the happiness on the client’s face once they lay their eyes on the finished artwork. I want them to be 100% satisfied with the outcome of the art and still get shocked to see the happiness on their faces.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives do not understand how much time and effort is put into the artist’s handiwork. They sometimes scoff at creatives attempting to sell or advertise their work but they fail to understand how much passion, resources and time are included in the artist’s work.
