We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittney Mullins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
I’m not sure I would say it is something that others disagree with, but I feel as though a lot of photographers want to keep their retouching, team, locations, and process, a secret. I’ve always felt that it’s important to help others and provide information that can be helpful or make someone better. If I were to tell you exactly how I retouched a photo, I think everyone would do it differently. Same with shooting at a location. Everyone sees things differently and has their own style! When I was younger, I wish someone had shared with me the things I know now. Sharing my process and knowledge in photography is something I want to begin sharing on social platforms.
Brittney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
A love for fashion and photography started at a very young age for me! I believe I was around 8, and I truly started by taking pictures of my Barbies and having fashion shows with them. Since then, I’ve made quite the upgrade with my subjects! But all jokes aside, my passion for fashion and fashion photography has been there since I can remember. I really focused on shooting conceptual self-portraiture from 14-18, and still some today. It became, and still is, my way of expressing myself and processing the way I feel. For the last 12 years, I’ve focused on fashion, beauty, and portraiture. With my photography, I always try to tell a story. Even if the shoot doesn’t call for it, I’ll try to in the slightest way. My favorite types of shoots are when we can think of the scene we’re creating as if it’s out of a page from a book, or a moment that’s been paused. For me, that’s what makes photography fun. You have a blank canvas, and you can create your dream or nightmare, and make it a reality with a photo. That is why I love fashion photography! You can create a completely fictional moment, all inspired by a dress, person, or place. It’s everything!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Making someone’s dream shoot or Pinterest board a reality. If someone tells me that I captured exactly what they envisioned or better, that’s it. That’s what I want to do. Along with creating a bond with someone over the things that they love and are passionate about.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pretty recently actually! I found out I was pregnant with my beautiful baby girl about two years ago, and I had to make a decision to pivot what I was doing. At the time, I wasn’t sure what that move was going to do for me. I was leaving a full-time position in photography and marketing to go back into freelancing. I say it often, but my girl changed the trajectory of my life, yes, and she changed the trajectory of my photography career. And I’m better for it. She’s my world!
