We were lucky to catch up with Wayne Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Wayne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think in order to become successful in business, one must able to remain flexible and teachable. When I started my career in personal training, I made the mistake of being unwilling to learn other skills. I found out very quickly that I was stunting my own growth career wise, and falling behind financially. Once, I began learning new skills, in and out of fitness, I started excelling. The lesson learned was never stop learning.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Wayne Williams, CEO of BuffBoy Fitness, which is a personal fitness and health company. I started operations in 2014 with the hopes of helping my close friends get in shape. It grew beyond what I could have imagined once I started getting media coverage about my services. I am most proud of being able to pivot during the pandemic, in terms of being able to offer remote services. BuffBoy Fitness is available to train clients in Los Angeles, California and Toronto, Canada.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Prior to my career, I was a newspaper courier who had dreams of becoming a fitness trainer. I had completed a personal training course in college, but was unable to find work in my field. I saved some money from my newspaper job to create flyers for my new company, BuffBoy Fitness. Then, I started placing my flyer in each newspaper, and hit the road! I delivered the newspapers to 100 houses a day, then started getting phone calls from potential clients. Every I tried doubling the amount of homes hit, so that I could double my clientele. When I accumulated 10 clients a day, steadily, I eventually quit my newspaper job to work my new career full time!

How’d you meet your business partner?
My co-founder was my cousin and best friend Greg. We’ve known each other our whole lives because we were the same age. He taught me about physical fitness, and nutrition for many years, but little did I know he was suffering from a chronic blood condition. He gave me a nickname, BuffBoy, anytime we would train. He told me we should start a company called The Dream Team Fitness where we would train clients together. In October of 2011, he fell sick and subsequently died of sickle cell anemia. In January of 2014, I created BuffBoy Fitness in honor of his nickname for me.
