We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katelyn Guild a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katelyn, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Boudoir is an industry that is notorious for copious amounts of photoshop, body altering and editing. There is a pressure to change clients into the “ideal body type” in order to get the sale or be considered a heavy hitter in the world of boudoir…and I truly don’t follow that standard.
Since I began boudoir, I have had a really strong policy on not body altering and still stick to that today. It is my responsibility to show my clients how stunning they are….just the way they are. Not some fantasy land version of themselves.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Katelyn and I am a full time body inclusive boudoir photographer. My work focuses on helping people really see themselves in all their power and I have been working with couples and individuals since 2016.
I originally started as a photographer that did a little of everything, but it didn’t feed my soul. I was working with brides, families, headshots, real estate and any other photography client that walked through my door. The sad, but incredibly common theme throughout each shoot was how much people hated their bodies. I was getting requests to edit bodies to look thinner, smaller, younger, more curvy, etc and I knew I needed to create a space where people could celebrate who they are right now. Not in ten pounds or two years.
That’s how my company Katelyn Scott, LLC came to be. I created a size inclusive studio that is solely dedicated to the art of boudoir and encourage humans all over the world to get in front of the lens and celebrate who the heck they are. The client wardrobe has pieces from 6X-XXS and welcomes any and all humans that walk through these doors.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is my jam and not for the reason that most business owners would think. Social media is NOT a place for you to sell your goods. Social media is a place for you to build trust with your audience. Allow yourself to show up authentically and show them that you are a real human. Be unapologetic in you approach.
We have a free and accessible marketing tool at our fingertips and you need to be using it in a way that feels approachable. Share the knowledge you have in an engaging manner and you will have clients for life.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
TikTok surprisingly! With over 600K followers, I have people inquiring from all over the states. People actually fly in to work with me here in Raleigh. When you can expand your network outside of your city limits, you can tap into an expansive market that you didn’t have access to before. Networking locally is wonderful, but building a community of like minded humans on a bigger scale is how you generate new business.
