We were lucky to catch up with Jordyn Waits recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordyn, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
I have always believed that as a Photography Business Owner I’m not only selling photos, but I am selling an experience. From the moment I receive an inquiry, to the moment my clients open their final photos, I want them to have memories and an amazing journey to look back on and remember every time they see their photos. Photography to me is about preserving a moment in time that is otherwise lost forever. I want them to remember the joy, what the moment smelt like, what the weather felt like, what they laughed about together. In order to achieve this goal with every session, I really take the time to get to know my clients. If it is a couple, I send them a couple’s questionnaire before their session. I want to know how they met, who said I love you first, what makes them, THEM! I can use some of this information to really tailor their session based on their relationship and create amazing memories for them. For example, if my couple says in their questionnaire that their first date was at a coffee shop, I suggest shooting part of their session in a coffee shop and kind of reflecting and recreating that moment again for them! This brings out real joy, love, and creates a new memory for them that they can re-experience every time they look back on their photos.

Jordyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey friends! My name is Jordyn and I’m the face behind Jordyn Waits Photography! I have always loved photography but never would have guessed that a passionate hobby would have turned into a career. I am beyond grateful that I have the opportunity to not only do what I love every day, but I also get to share that passion with my incredible clients. I absolutely love capturing sweet and genuine moments in people’s lives! I am married to the most incredible man. He is my best friend, support system, college sweetheart, and better half. He has supported me through this dream and helped me to grow Jordyn Waits Photography into what it is today. Together we have a perfect daughter named Emberly and a little fur child named Lexi May. Before I was Jordyn Waits Photography, my name used to be The Peachy Tripod! I am from Georgia and my heart belongs in the peach state. Therefore, The Peachy Tripod was born! I loved my old name but as I grew as a business I decided that the name just didn’t serve me anymore. I am a freelancer and work alone to make this business what it is, so I decided it was more fitting to put my name at the face of the company. One of my biggest goals is to always be genuine, raw, and authentic, and I think my new name helps me to achieve that in a way I wasn’t able to before.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Experience, experience, experience! People talk, whether they are saying good things or bad, they are going to talk either way! My goal is to give every client a million good things to say and hopefully no bad. Like I stated before, I am selling an experience rather than just a service or product. I truly want my clients to have the most amazing experience possible. Images can strike our memory and senses in some pretty amazing ways and when my clients look back upon the photos I took of them, I want them to smile as they remember the laughs, joy, peace, and love that was shared in that moment. My absolute favorite thing to hear is when clients tell me their boyfriend or husband absolutely hates getting his photos taken, and then at the end of the session the guy always says, “that was actually really fun!”. This response means everything to me because it means I did the job I set out to do. Now, when my clients look back at these images they won’t think, “oh my gosh these are cute but dang {insert name} was miserable. They will think, “look at how much fun we had! I want to do another session!”. I believe this experience above anything else is what keeps my clients coming back and sending others my way.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
As a creative business owner, I am very well versed in my craft of photography, however, the business side of things was and still is a bit of a struggle. When you set out to start a creative business you don’t think much about the business side at first, you just think “well I’m great at XYZ and love it so I’m going to turn it into a business”. In order to be successful and earn a living in this career, I have had to train my brain to not only think creatively, but also to be business savvy at the same time. Before I started my business I knew very little about this world. I ended up getting a certification in Online Business Marketing and E-Commerce from Google. I highly recommend this certification for any business owner as it has taught me a lot about the world of business and how to stand out and be successful in a very saturated industry.
