We recently connected with April Curci and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, April thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Before working in brokerage as an agent, I assisted commerical agents in several different capacities – as a junior agent, as an administrative assistant, and as on office manager. I got to see and experience the process from most all of the different roles associated with the job. This perspective was invaluable to the shaping the person I am today. I saw what it was like to work with kind, appreciative agents and to work with agents where maybe those feelings of gratitude didn’t come through as strongly. It is not just one person making a deal happen, it is an entire team. I am so grateful to have learned early on the value of all of the moving parts of the team and to express that sentiment often. After all, I am indebted to those who help me close a deal.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a commercial real estate salesperson, focusing on the Charleston, SC market. I handle sales and leasing assignments across many commercial asset types including: industrial, retail, office, and multifamily. I am a third-generation commercial real estate professional, holding active sales licenses in both Arizona and South Carolina. I’ve been immersed in the Lowcountry’s commercial real estate market since 2013 and specialize in the logistics and transportation of products coming through the Panama Canal and their dispersal across the Unites States. I am a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), a designation fewer than 10% of commercial agents can claim which demonstrates advanced proficiency in financial, market, and decision-based analysis of commercial real estate.
I’m an Arizona native who became interested in commercial real estate in my youth while working for Transpacific Development Southwest in Phoenix, Arizona, a commercial real estate, development and property management firm that manages approximately 2 million square feet of commercial, retail and warehouse property throughout the southwest. It was in this role that I learned the ins-and-outs of the commercial real estate industry and adapted to the rigors of marketing, leasing, brokerage, and property and vendor management.
I graduated from the College of Charleston with a B.S. in Business Administration and three minors: Real Estate, Entrepreneurship and Biology.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons that I had to “unlearn” is scarcity mindset. I entered a market saturated with veteran agents who had been working for 30+ years in the industry. I quickly noticed it was common to view your colleagues as competition. I think some folks have the mentally that they have to “get their piece of the pie.” It is easy to fall into the scarcity mindset as it is a trap. However, one of the most impactful lessons I have unlearned is this exact mentality. I firmly believe that what you focus on expands, so focus on yourself, your work, your clients, your earnings, as opposed to focusing on others. If you are adding value and serving clients well, there will always be enough “pie” for you and then some.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
This question is the pillar of how I created my brand from day 1 in the business. Growing up around several prominent developers throughout my life, I quickly heard the negatives of the construction and brokerage industry. I heard tales of fibs and deceit. I knew that when I became an agent, I was determined to be known by my reputation. I want clients and my colleagues to know that I am true to my word. If it comes out of my mouth, it is truthful and a comment I will stand behind. I believe acting with integrity is of the utmost importance.
