We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kiara Thompson-Fincher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kiara below.
Kiara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Now I know the general misconception on children who comes out of divorces and how messed up we are, however my parents were the best parents any kid can ask for and I respect them more for who I am today I want to start there. My mom and dad had me young. That as well didn’t hinder me from anything. I grew up spoiled on both sides, I always got two birthdays , two Christmas’s , etc. When I got to high school I graduated a year early and decided to go to Savannah state since I was only seventeen and didn’t want to go far. School didn’t work out for payment reasons and I still had two years to finish so I decided to go the Air Force , which also didn’t pan out for other reasons so I just started working regular jobs. Now mind you I’ve always loved makeup. One day just thinking of an extra hustle I decided to start taking bookings for full beats. Didn’t succeed in that at first, Ha. But then I stumbled across brow tint and instantly feel in love. I never took a class just practice and mastered it and begin to take bookings.
Throughout my WHOLE journey of finding myself my parents were there every step of the way and always keep in touch with each other on ways to keep me motivated and I thank them because they made me the strong minded, versatile, woman I am today. Today, my mom owns a business herself, selling life insurance, and she’s still a role model in my life and someone who I inspire to be like and I still learn so much from her everyday. Today, my dad has won numerous champions rings with Memorial Private School and he has taught me many things that I will carry with me over a life time and also things I can instill in my business. All in all, I wouldn’t be the boss I am today without the strong foundation I had.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into the business to accumulate more income, however I always knew I wanted to make people feel better about themselves. I tried to major in psychology because I want to be a counseling psychologist and help people out. It’s crazy because being a service provider I still am able to do that, people come in and vent about a bad day with me all the time and I make sure to always give positive feedback while always being sensitive to their vulnerability. I think that’s what makes me different from other brands. I truly love making people look good on the outside AND inside.
I offer brow tinting, brow lamination, microshading , eyebrow & chin waxing, mink lash and makeup services.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I honestly think what helped built my reputation in this market is social media, good customer service and dedication. Social media ,as we all know, does wonders on spreading the word and showing people what you can do up close and personal. It’s easy to sell you a product with a good before and after picture.
From me working in the cooperate world I also think this helped me with having the great customer service skills I have today because that’s the only reason I can think of that God always blessed me with so many good jobs and I still had the option to chose whether I can work or chase my own dreams.
And I say dedication because people got to see me start from the bottom and work my way to the top. I worked hard to get to where I’m at today and I am truly proud of what else God has in store for me.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The funding on my business in strictly done out of my pocket. I would take the money I made from my jobs and put it into my side hustle till my side hustle started paying enough to pay my bills and me living comfortably. I do however, take advantages of grants when they become open but , I haven’t had the opportunity of receiving one yet but… it’s coming!
